Big 12 Conference Championship Preview

Conference week is here—the most important week of the collegiate indoor season, second only to nationals. This year, Texas Tech will host the BIG 12 Indoor Championships from February 28th to March 1st.

The BIG 12 has long been a highly competitive conference, and athletes who excel here often replicate their success on the national stage. This was evident during the cross country season when the BYU men’s and women’s teams claimed victory not only at the BIG 12 Championships but also at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

On the men's side, Texas Tech leads the short sprints with the top three fastest 60m times in the conference this season. Shawn Brown (6.54), Malachi Snow (6.55), and Antoine Andrews (6.60) have all posted impressive marks. Brown, in particular, could be a strong contender for the 60m and 200m double, especially with stiff competition from Kashie Crockett of TCU. The two raced to the fastest 200m times earlier this month at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, with Crockett clocking 20.68 and Brown close behind at 20.69, leading the conference.

On the distance front, BYU’s Casey Clinger has also made a statement, posting a conference-leading 7:41.05 in the men’s 3000m. He’s further solidifying himself as a powerhouse in the distance events.

Switching to the women’s side, BYU again stands out. Meghan Hunter, Riley Chamberlain, and Lexy Halladay-Lowry currently lead the conference in the 800m, mile, and 3000m, respectively. Notably, Halladay-Lowry not only leads the BIG 12 but also the nation in the 3000m, with Chamberlain right behind her. These performances highlight the strength of BYU’s distance program, a testament to the coaching of Diljeet Taylor.

The BIG 12 Championships are sure to deliver exciting performances, with athletes posting both strong conference times and nationally competitive marks this weekend!
