The Big Ten Conference Championship is slated for Feb. 28 to March 1 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In 2024, Wisconsin scored the Big Ten title on the men’s side, while Illinois took the trophy on the women’s side. In 2025, those teams, along with a few others, are in contention for the conference crown.

Here are the main storylines to watch heading into the weekend’s championship meet.

Oregon, UCLA, USC And Washington Join The Fray

The Big Ten got a whole lot tougher in 2025 with four western powerhouse schools joining the mix. Suddenly, we have contentious battles and the newcomers are looking to establish themselves in the Big Ten.

Men's Perennial Contenders Will Deal With Likes Of USC.

According to the FloTrack College Rankings, USC is the top team in the nation this year -- and for good reason. A quick look at the Big Ten TFRRS performance list shows you why.

In the 60m alone, USC has five of the top six performances in the Big Ten this year. They could easily score over 30 points in that event alone.

It’s a similar story in the rest of the sprint events and long jump. John Chrstyn (JC) Steven tops the overall collegiate leaderboards in both the 60m and long jump. He’ll be a force for USC this weekend.

Then you have the distance powerhouse in Washington.

The Huskies will look to rack up as many points in the mid-distance events as possible, while simultaneously trying to steal points from Oregon and Penn State.

When you look at the 800m board, Penn State and Washington each have three men capable of running sub-1:47. You can expect those two teams to split the 800m. Then in the mile, Washington splits the board with Washington. UW has five men under 3:56, while Oregon has three.

In total, UW is unbelievably dominant, with nine men under 3:59 this year at the mile distance. That sort of depth allows them to get creative about where they use their distance talents. They can spread their mid-distance guys evenly throughout the 600m, 800m, mile, 3,000m and distance medley relay to maximize their point total.

The 5,000m is the only weakness for Washington on the distance side. Wisconsin will look to make up some ground in that event. The Badgers have five men under 13:47, they'll also look to tack on points in the shot put and weight throw.

Illinois Women Will Look To Stand Their Ground

The Illini will attempt to win a second-straight Big Ten title this weekend. Last year, the team scored 104 points to win the program’s first title since 2013. Penn State finished second with 87 points.

This year, Illinois is very strong in the jump events. Darja Sopova scored 15 points for the team in 2024, and she is in a great position to improve on that outing this year. Entering the 2025 Championship, Sopova is ranked third in the Big Ten in the long jump and seventh in the triple jump.

But when you look at the long jump holistically, you’ll see that the Illini dominate the rankings. They have fierce athletes who have jumped farther than 21 feet, with two over 22 feet. They’re actually the only team with athletes who have cleared that aforementioned 21-foot mark.

The team also has a good chance of scoring valuable points in the pentathlon. Lucie Kienast leads the Big Ten in that event with her 4,428 point total from January 24th.

The biggest threat to Illinois, however, will be Oregon. The Ducks have several of the biggest names in the country.

Silan Ayyildiz just set the NCAA record in the mile with her 4:23.46 from the BU Valentine Invite, and Wilma Nielsen has run 4:25.78 in the mile. Then they have Mia Barnett, Ali Ince and Julia Nielsen, who have all broken 4:33.

The Ducks also have the likes of Anika Thompson and recent Texas Tech transfer Juliet Cherubet. They’ll likely contribute points in the 3,000m and 5,000m.

On the sprints side, the Ducks have Jadyn Mays, who just so happens to be one of the best sprinters in the nation. She’ll look to rack up points in the 60m and 200m. They also have one of the best throwers in the nation in Jaida Ross, who is ranked second in the Big Ten in the shot put.

Other teams to consider include Nebraska and USC. Nebraska offers a ridiculous amount of depth in the field events, while USC could simply dominate the sprint events.
