There was no denying Heather MacLean on the oval in Boston on Sunday.
Team New Balance Boston's MacLean, racing in familiar territory at BU on Sunday at the Last Chance National Qualifier, clocked a stellar 4:17.01 winning effort in the women's mile to move up to No. 2 on the American indoor all-time list.
Only Ellie St. Pierre has gone faster indoors, holding the American record at 4:16.85. The run at BU also makes MacLean the fifth-fastest U.S. miler in history -- indoor or outdoor.

MacLean went to the front from the gun with the early race pacers and began to put on the jets after 1,200 meters. From there, she split 32.27 and 31.64 on her final two laps to cross the line first in historic fashion.
Her performance shaves over six seconds off her previous indoor personal record of 4:23.32 set earlier this season at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. In second and third, OAC teammates Sintayuehu Vissa and Maia Ramsden also had strong runs of 4:21.51 and 4:21.56.
MacLean entered the meet coming off a strong third place effort over 1,500 meters at the USATF Indoor Championships in Staten Island. She ran 4:06.69 for that bronze medal performance, and could take a spot on Team USA at the World Indoor Championships after winner Nikki Hiltz said they would not compete in Nanjing at the championships.
Article Update*
It was later revealed that Heather MacLean ran an American Record in the 1,500m by virtue of her 3:59.60 en-route split. The time bests the 3:59.98 that Regina Jacob's posted in 2003.
Jacobs was later convicted of doping, but her record continued to stand for another 22-years.
