The first day of competition at the 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships ended with an epic showdown between the nation's top two milers and their respective teams in the men’s distance medley relay.
In the end Friday night, the Virginia Cavaliers came away with their first national title in the event, just missing a NCAA record in the process.
Anchored by junior Gary Martin, Virginia posted a time of 9:15.12, edging North Carolina and its standout finisher Ethan Strand (9:17.17).
The Cavaliers were chasing their own indoor record of 9:14.19, set Feb. 21 at the Arkansas Qualifier in Fayetteville, Arkansas. That was the second-fastest DMR ever run behind an all-conditions performance by the University of Washington a week prior (9:14.10).

Virginia's winning effort Friday did produce a meet record, however, besting the previous mark of 9:19.98, set by Oregon in 2021, and topped the facility record of 9:42.81 by Wingate in 2023.
The first three legs of the race for Virginia on Friday were run by a trio of seniors - Wes Porter, Alex Sherman and Conor Murphy.
UNC was represented by Parker Wolfe (senior), Nick Steed (freshman), Drew Regnier (sophomore) and Strand (senior).
In all, the DMR covers 4,000 meters, with each leg being a different distance – 1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600 meters, respectively.
This indoor season, Strand (3:48.32) and Martin (3:48.82) own the two fastest mile times in the country, but they both opted out of that race for the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships.
Instead, they decided to focus on the DMR and the 3,000-meter race, which are being contested on different days. The semifinals for the mile took place shortly before the DMR kicked off.
Simply enough, the opportunity to be part of a team victory made the decision easy for both anchor runners, with sharing a victory taking priority over anything else.
And, as expected, the race became a battle between Martin and Strand.
Strand pulled into the lead with two laps remaining, and he and Martin distanced themselves going into the last lap.
Martin pulled ahead of Strand heading into the last 200 meters and never looked back.
Martin’s split was 3:48.12 split, while Strand delivered a 3:49.23 performance. For reference, their portion of Friday’s DMR was about 9 meters short of a mile.
The 3,000 will take place Saturday night at 7 p.m. Eastern, with Strand and Wolfe seeking redemption and Martin hoping to keep the momentum going.
The 2025 Division I Indoor Championships is taking place over two days at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and will conclude Saturday night.
The women's DMR was won by BYU (Jenna Hutchins, Sami Oblad, Tessa Buswell, Riley Chamberlain) with a meet and facility record time of 10:45.34.
