After a strong, but injury-plagued start to her collegiate career at the University of Pennsylvania, Isabella Whittaker transferred to Arkansas to use her final year of eligibility and hone her skills as part of one of the nation’s strongest track and field programs.

Whittaker wasted no time becoming a contributor for the Razorbacks and gave her team a huge boost with a record performance Saturday in the women’s 400-meter race at the 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The 23-year-old graduate student won the two-heat final in a blazing 49.24 seconds, setting a facility, meet, collegiate and American record in the process.

The world record for the women’s short-track/indoor 400m of 49.17 belongs to Dutch superstar Femke Bol, who actually owned the top three times overall (49.17 in 2024, 49.24 in 2024 and 49.26 in 2023).

The American and collegiate record previously belonged to former Arkansas standout Britton Wilson, who ran 49.48 on the way to the title at the 2023 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships.

This year, Whittaker and the Razorbacks are in pursuit of the program’s third consecutive women’s team title at the NCAA Division Indoor Championships, and they’re hoping Whittaker’s success will spark the comeback they very much need halfway through the second day of competition at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

At the time of the women’s 400 on Saturday, Arkansas was in fifth place overall, while seven-time women’s champion Oregon is setting the pace and closing in on title No. 8.

Whittaker’s appearance at this weekend’s event is bittersweet, because though she qualified for the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 400m and 4x400 relay with Penn, she was forced to miss the event due to injury.

While she was out of commission, her future team was celebrating the 50th national championship for the Arkansas track and field program and fifth women’s indoor team title since 2015.

Whittaker will be back in action Saturday at 3:20 p.m. Eastern to see if she can help the Razorbacks to a win in the 4x400, while also closing the gap with Oregon.

The two-day meet began Friday and will conclude Saturday night.
