There are few certainties in life. But in 2025, one of them seems to be the dominance of Josh Hoey.

25-year-old Hoey continued his undefeated season with gold in the men's 800m at the 2025 World Indoor Track and Field Championships, clocking 1:44.77 for the win.

Not only was it Hoey's first world gold, but it was also his first global medal and first global championship appearance.

Hoey navigated the rounds with ease, staying clean as he advanced through to Sunday's final of the 800m. He swept his preliminary race and his semi-final heat.

On Sunday, it was business as usual. After the gun, Hoey jumped out to the lead and fellow Team USA member Brandon Miller followed closely behind him. At 300m, Miller moved to the lead and led the field through 400m in 50.64.

Hoey then took the pole position with just over a lap remaining. Eliott Crestan of Belgium moved up onto Hoey's shoulder late, but the American had too much left and Hoey was able to hold off Crestan. Hoey crossed in 1:44.77, with Crestain just four-hundredths back (1:44.81).

In third, Elvin Josue Canales crossed behind the leaders in 1:45.03. Brandon Miller faded to fifth (1:46.44).

For Hoey, it has been a Cinderella year.

The 2025 campaign started for Hoey at the Quaker Invitational on UPenn's new surface at the Ott Center. There, he set the American indoor record in the 1,000m at 2:14.48.

He then went on a winning stretch, taking races against the best talents in the U.S. He won the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix 1,500m, the Millrose Games 800m (setting the American 800m record) and the USA Indoor Track and Field Championship 800m (breaking the American record again). Hoey has been simply unbeatable in 2025.

But his rise started much earlier than three months ago.

After going pro out of high school in 2018, Hoey fell off the map. He struggled for the better part of six years.

But 2024 was a year of change for Hoey. He found his confidence with a third-place finish in the 800m at the 2024 USATF Indoor Track and Field Championships and then ran 1:45.54 in his outdoor season opener to win the Florida Relays 800m. Later in the year at the U.S. Olympic Trials, Hoey placed fourth, narrowly missing a spot on the Olympic team for the men's 800m.

Yet the momentum was set in motion. He scored a win at the Holloway Pro Classic, was second at the Fifth Avenue Mile and opened his 2024-25 indoor season with a 3:52.61 mile at BU.

Now, Hoey is a two-time American record holder, a U.S. champion and a World Indoor champion.
