The 2025 TCS London Marathon Could Be The Best Of All-Time

The 2025 London Marathon is slated for Sunday, April 27, 2025 and the field is arguably one of the best in London Marathon History.

With storylines a-plenty, there is a ton of action to look forward to on the big day. Today we'll take a giant look ahead and set some expectations for the 2025 event with our favorite storylines to follow. The London Marathon will stream LIVE on FloTrack in the U.S., Australia and Canada.

1. Olympic Champion Alex Yee Will Make His Marathon Debut

For the Brits, one major storyline prevails above the rest.

2024 World and Olympic Champion Triathlete, Alex Yee, will make the leap to the marathon distance and make his attempt at British history. Yee, is already coming off of a historic year. He won Olympic Gold in August before returning to the triathlon circuit and winning the World Championship in October.

The transition to the marathon is so exciting because he has a chance to perform tremendously well. The FloTrack crew caught up with him this week for a Workout Wednesday session. That's coming soon, but in the meantime we'll give you a little spoiler...

He's really fit.

So what kind of performance is he capable of? In January, Yee ran 28:07 over 10,000m in the roads of Valencia. He has personal bests of 7:45 (3K), 13:26 (5K Road) and 27:51 (10K).

Yee is supposedly shooting for a sub-2:10 effort. A run of that caliber would slot him inside the Top 25 British marathoners of all-time. If he can crack 2:09, only nine Brits have run so fast. Sub 2:08 would mean a place amongst the all-time greats of British distance running. Only Mo Farah (2:05.11), Emile Cairess (2:06.46), Mahamed Mahamed (2:07:05), and Steve Jones (2:07:13) are on that list.

Of note, Emile Cairess was originally entered in the TCS London Marathon, but he made the decision to withdraw due to injury in February. Another Brit, Marc Scott also withdrew from this year's field due to injury. He ran 2:11:19 at last year's London Marathon and he was expected to be one of the top contenders from Great Britain.

2. Kenenisa Bekele and Eliud Kipchoge Will Square Off Yet Again

The long-time "rivalry" may be in the later years of its life, and this may be one of the last opportunities to watch Kenenisa Bekele and Eliud Kipchoge race in the same race.

At age 42, Bekele continues to defy father time. At last year's London Marathon, Bekele ran 2:04:15, a men's masters marathon world record.

Kipchoge turned 40 in November. In 2024, Kipchoge ran 2:06:50 at the Tokyo Marathon. He unfortunately was a DNF at the Paris Olympic Marathon.

Ashley Tysiac wrote about their rivalry in greater depth here. An excerpt from her article can be found below:

Bekele's record against Kipchoge on the track? He went 13-for-16 in track races, however Kipchoge has beaten Bekele in every marathon the two have raced together, except for the Paris Olympic marathon.

"Of course, it will be special to once again run against Eliud, we have enjoyed some fantastic moments racing one another over the past 22 years," Bekele said in a statement. "I'm looking forward to that continuing at the TCS London Marathon."

3. Can Ruth Chepngetich And Sifan Hassan Deliver Another Historic Run?

Last year, Ruth Chepngetich ran 2:09.56 in the streets of Chicago, shattering the previous World Record and becoming the first woman to run under 2:10. With the level of talent in this year's London Marathon field, could the women's world record go down again?

Hassan's 2:13:44 (Chicago 2023) is the third fastest in marathon history.

Since then and most recently, she went on a tear at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. She earned Bronze in the 5,000m and 10,000m before returning to the course and running an Olympic Record 2:22:55 for Olympic Gold over the marathon distance.

While Chepngetich has the fastest time in world history, Hassan is arguably the best marathoner in the world. So, a clash between the fastest and best could be in store on race-day.
