Just over a year from hosting the 2026 World Athletics Relays, the Botswana Sports Commission was in a race against the clock to ensure everything went according to plan.

Despite having to lay down an entirely new track surface just days before the meet, Gaborone is more than ready to play host to any meet that comes their way.

However, the biggest story of the 2025 Botswana Golden Grand Prix was the performances of some of the greatest athletes in the world.

1. Letsile Tebogo Breaks The Tape In Front Of The Home Crowd

What better way to open up your outdoor campaign in your best event than by snagging the win in front of the roaring home crowd?

In the second heat of the 200m, Letsile Tebogo clocked 20.23 to pull away from South Africa's Luxolo Adams down the homestretch. The Olympic champion appeared to be comfortable from the gun, staying even with Adams around the curve before shifting gears and cruising to the win.

Adams was second in 20.42, lowering his season best by one-hundredth of a second.

2. Akani Simbine, and Ferdinand Omanyala, Two Of Africa's Greatest Sprinters Go Head-To-Head Over 100m

Heading into today's race, both Akani Simbine and Ferdinand Omanyala were looking for strong starts to the season, and it's safe to say they got what they came for.

In their 100m season debut, it was a battle from the moment the gun fired, but Simbine's legs pushed him just ahead of Omanya, who finished second in 10.00. Simbine on the other hand, broke the tape as the clock read 9.90, coming just eight-hundredths of a second shy from his lifetime best that he ran in the 2024 Olympic final.

Both men ran considerably quicker than they did in their 2024 season debut, respectively.

Simbine improved by over a third of a second, and Omanyala went from 10.03 to 10:00.

3. Dalilah Muhammed Wins 400mH In Final Season

After competing at the inaugural Grand Slam Track meet in Kingston, Jamaica, the former world record holder made her way across the Atlantic for the next leg of her farewell tour.

Dalilah Muhammad took home the win over fellow American Cassandra Tate, winning 53.81-55.59. The 35-year-old lowered her SB by over three-quarters of a second, taking the No. 2 spot in the world lists so far this year.

One of the most decorated and successful athletes in the sport's history will vie for a spot on Team USA later this summer.

4. Botswana's Kethobogile Haingura and Tshepiso Masalela Finish 1-2 In 800m

One of many home victories that Botswanan fans were treated to came in the men's 800m, where compatriots Kethobogile Haingura and Tshepiso Masalela both ran sub-1:45 en route to a 1-2 finish.

Haingura surged late to hold off Masalela, with the pair running 1:44.18 and 1:44.77, putting them at No. 2 and No. 8 in the world this season.

With both men having represented Botswana at the 2024 Paris Olympics, it's no surprise either one is already performing this well.
