Yomif Kejelcha is once again the fastest half marathoner in history. Racing at the Media Maratón Ciudad de Buenos Aires this Sunday, the Ethiopian clocked 56:51, shaving 29 seconds off the pending world record of 57:20 set by Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon this past March.
It's familiar territory for Kejelcha, who first set the record in Valencia back in October 2024 with a 57:30 clocking - only for Kiplimo to take it from him. The two have effectively been trading the title back and forth: Kiplimo actually ran an even faster 56:42 in Barcelona last year, but that performance has not been ratified because the course didn't meet the World Athletics' regulations for record-eligible races.
This new world record performance from Kejelcha adds to a breakout stretch for the 28-year-old, who already holds the world 10K record (26:31, set in Castellón, Spain, in February 2025) and made headlines earlier this year at the London Marathon, where he ran 1:59:41 in his marathon debut - the fastest debut in history - finishing second to winner Sabastian Sawe (1:59:30) as both men became the first to officially break two hours in a record-eligible race.
The record now belongs to Kejelcha again - at least until Kiplimo, or someone else, comes for it.
