NCAA Picks : Kevin Liao Wins

The results are in! Here are the results of our panel, which attempted to pick the winners of the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. With the exception of the entire panel picking Jeshua Anderson in the 400 hurdles and Emma Coburn in the steeplechase, there were a wide variety of picks across the board.

Each panelist received 2 points if their athlete finished first and 1 point if their athlete finished second. Without further adieu, the winner is....

Kevin Liao of Spikeduppsychedup.com, narrowly edging out Paul Michel of Flotrack and Kevin Sully of houseofrun.com.

The final score for the panelists:

Kevin Liao, Spikeduppsychedup.com - 30 points
Paul Michel, Flotrack - 28 points

Kevin Sully, houseofrun.com - 27 points
Ray Machuca, Flocasts production - 25 points
Jake Gardner, Flo contributor - 24 points
Cate Westenhover, Flo intern (and Baylor Bear) - 19 points
Danny Mackey, Flo contributor - 17 points
Ryan Craven, Flo contributor - 12 points

Congratulations, Kevin Liao. You are a gentleman and a scholar. How the scoring broke down...

Women's 10k : Juliet Bottorff, Duke
2 Points : NA
1 Point : NA
The panel struggled mightily here. Going in, the race was wide open…and the result proved as much. The sophomore from Duke won after coming in with the 6th fastest time.

Men's 10k : Leonard Korir, Iona
2 Points : Kevin L
1 Point : Paul, Jake, Cate, Kevin S
The consensus coming into the 10k was that Korir and Chelanga would battle it out for the win, which is exactly what happened. Korir won the fight, however, as most of our panel had it flip-flopped. Good work Kevin Liao.

Women's 400 Hurdles : Ti'erra Brown, Miami
2 Points : NA
1 Point : Paul, Cate, Jake, Kevin L, Kevin S, Danny, Ray, Ryan
Jake had the school right, but the wrong Hurricane (Takecia Jameson). Turquoise Thompson upset for the win.

Men's 400 Hurdles : Jeshua Anderson, Washington State
2 Points : Everyone
Perhaps the easiest pick of the weekend. Everyone picked Anderson to redeem himself from last year's 2nd place finish. He did, as he goes 3/4 in NCAA championships during his career at USC.

Women's 100 : Candyce McGrone, Oklahoma
2 Points : NA
1 Point: NA
Tough one here as well, as McGrone pulls off the huge upset. Semoy Hackett and Jeneba Tarmoh came in as heavy favorites, but failed to advance to finals.

Men's 100 : Ngoni Makusha, FSU
2 Points : Paul, Cate, Ray
1 Point : NA
After Jeff Demps of Florida failed to advance, we scurried to make our picks. Those who picked Makusha were in luck, as the FSU long jump specialist ran an all-time collegiate best of 9.89!

Women's 800 : Anne Kesselring, Oregon
2 Points : Jake, Kevin L, Ray
1 Point : NA
Kesselring finished the season on a roll with her win here (by one hundredth!) over Natalja Piliusina of Oklahoma State. Lea Wallace struggled, finishing 6th.

Men's 800 : Robby Andrews, UVA
2 Points : Paul, Kevin L, Kevin S
1 Point : Ray
It lived up to all of the hype. One of the best 800 finals of all-time, as Andrews times his kick just well enough to pass Charles Jock just before the line!

Men's Steeple : Matt Hughes, Louisville
2 Points : Cate, Jake, Kevin L, Kevin S, Ray
1 Point : NA
Hughes proved that he is great in the clutch, winning his second straight steeple title by pulling away from Princeton's Donn Cabral late.

Women's 400 : Jessica Beard, Texas A&M
2 Points : Paul, Jake, Kevin L, Kevin S, Ray, Ryan
1 Point : NA
A few has Diamond Dixon to repeat her Big 12 performance and steal one from Beard, but this race (and meet) was all Jessica Beard.

Men's 400 : Kirani James, Alabama
2 Points : Jake, Kevin L, Kevin S, Danny, Ray
1 Point : NA
James won in a terrific finish, edging out Tony McQay of Florida and Mike Berry of Oregon.

Women's 5000 : Sheila Reid, Villanova
2 Points : NA
1 Point : Ray
Our panel almost exclusively had faith in Hasay for the win, but this weekend was all about Sheila Reid. The Nova junior displayed a lethal kick to claim the win.

Men's 4x100 : FSU
2 Points : Jake
1 Point : Paul
The sprints were all about Florida State this weekend. Most of our panelists had Florida, but they dropped the baton and were unable to finish.

Women's 4x100 : LSU
2 Points : NA
1 Point : Paul, Jake, Kevin L, Kevin S, Danny, Ray, Ryan
LSU rides Kimberlyn Duncan and Semoy Hackett to a big win over A&M.

Men's 1500 : Matthew Centrowitz, Oregon
2 Points : Paul, Jake, Kevin S, Danny
1 Point : Kevin L, Ryan
Centro and Dorian Ulrey were the favorites coming in and the two battled it out till the end. Centro claims his first individual title with a dynamite kick.

Women's 1500 : Sheila Reid, Villanova
2 Points : Paul, Ryan
1 Point : NA
Like the 5k, our panel leaned toward Hasay taking the 1500 title, but this was not her meet. Reid ran a terrific race and finished the win with a blazing last 200 for the win, edging out Lucy Van Dalen of Stony Brook for the win.

Men's 200 : Maurice Mitchell, Florida State
2 Points : Cate, Kevin L, Danny
1 Point : NA
Maurice Mitchell came in the slight favorite over Rakieem Salaam of Oklahoma, but  he dominated the race, turning in a sub-20 performance for the win.

Women's 200 : Kimberlyn Duncan, LSU
2 Points : Paul, Kevin L, Kevin S, Ray
1 Point : Jake, Danny
Kimberlyn Duncan was dominating in this meet, helping LSU win the 4x100 and adding a runner-up finish in the 100 to his 200 win. Duncan's 22.24 is the fastest time in the world this season.

Women's Steeple : Emma Coburn, Colorado
2 Points : Everyone
1 Point : NA
If the 400 hurldes was the easiest pick of the weekend, this was 1A. Coburn pulled away from Stephanie Garcia late as the two dominated the field.

Women's 100 Hurdles : Nia Ali, USC
2 Points : Paul, Kevin L, Kevin S, Ray
1 Point : Danny
Nia Ali came in tied for the nation lead with her 12.74, but the USC senior turned it up a notch here in Des Moines, running 12.63 for the win.

Men's 110 Hurdles : Barrett Nugent, LSU
2 Points : Paul, Cate, Ray
1 Point : Kevin L, Kevin S, Danny, Ryan
Nugent dethroned the champion, winning in 13.28, the fastest non wind-aided time of the season.

Men's 5000 : Sam Chelanga, Liberty
2 Points : Cate, Jake
1 point : Kevin S
Chelanga got redemption from the 10k here, as he goes early enough to take the zap out of Korir and Lalang's kicks. A gutsy race for the Liberty legend.

Women's 4x400 : Texas A&M
2 Points : Paul, Kevin L, Kevin S
1 Point : NA
Texas A&M rode the strength of one Jessica Beard for the 4x400 (and team) win. Beard split a 49.14 to anchor the Aggies past Auburn.

Men's 4x400 : Texas A&M
2 Points : Paul, Cate, Jake, Kevin L, Kevin S, Danny
1 Point : Ray
A&M was the best 4x400 team all year and they backed it up here, using their win here to fuel them to the team title.
