Heat 3: Jonathan Borlee from Belgium, the former Florida State All-American, blazed to the #2 time in the world this year running 44.43. The time was a new Beligian national record. His previous personal best was 44.71 and best time this year was 44.88. He wasn't the only standout from the heat as second place was 44.91 (Pavel Maslak of Czech Republic, National Record) and third at 45.00 (Pavel Trenikhin of Russia). Donald Sanford, ASU grad, finish 5th in 45.71 running for Israel
Heat 4: Demetrius Pinder of the Bahamas (Texas A&M grad) dominates the section in 44.92. USA's Bryshon Nellum finishes second in 45.29 to continue his dream season. Another Texas A&M grad, Tabarie Henry, finishes 4th in 45.43 fading in the final 60 meters running for US Virgin Islands.
Heat 5: Chris Brown of the Bahamas holds off USA's Tony McQuay (Florida grad, NCAA Champ) as McQuay came of the curve in 3rd and charged the final 100 meters looking to his left at Brown as they both qualify (45.40 to 45.48). Jamaica's Jermaine Gonzales, who ran 44.40 in 2010, finished a disappointing 6th in 46.21.
Heat 6: LaShawn Merritt shocked everyone by pulling out of the blocks slowly and pulling off the track on the back stretch. The dream of defending his Olympic title washing away with an achilles injury that he had in Monaco. After attention focused back to the track, Lalonde Gordan of Trinidad led until the final straight when Aussie Steven Solomon took over, winning in 45.18 (Gordan 45.43). Solomon will be heading to Stanford in the fall. In a post race interview, Merritt said he will look to get ready for 2013 World Champs hinting that he will be pulling out of the 4x400 here in london.
Heat 7: Kevin Borlee caps of the Belgian twins presence in the opening rounds winning his section in 45.14. GB's Martyn Rooney looked good in the closing 100 to finish second in 45.36. Erison Hurtault, a Columbia grad running for Dominica, finished 5th in 46.05.
