Men's Decathlon Updates - 2012 London Olympic Games
EATON WINS GOLD AND HARDEE GETS SILVER!
After the final event event of the 1500 in the men's decathlon, world record-holder Ashton Eaton continued his decathlon domination today as he won his first Olympic gold medal with 8,869 points! US teammate and 2011 World Champion Trey Hardee followed Eaton with the silver in 8,671 points and Leonel Suarez of Cuba, bronze medalist in Beijing came away with the bronze in 8,523 points, a season's best.
Final Results:
Eaton extends lead in pole vault
All talk of Ashton Eaton being denied his first Olympic title were effectively silenced at the conclusion of the polt vault, the eighth event of the decathlon. Eaton cleared 5.20 meters on his first attempt and decided to stop competing at that point in order to save energy for the javelin and 1500 meters still to come.
Eaton's nearest rival Trey Hardee cleared 4.80 meters but then decided to skip 4.90 in favor of 5.00 meters but was unable to clear that height.
Eaton now sits are 7381 points after eight events, 222 points ahead of Hardee.
After seven events, Hardee closes down on Eaton
The runaway coronation of Ashton Eaton as the world's greatest athlete may not come as easily as many thought. Two-time world champion Trey Hardee gained 121 points on Eaton in Thursday's two morning events, the 110 meter hurdles and discus. Eaton now holds on to a 99 point lead over Hardee with the always unpredictable pole vault coming up this afternoon, followed by the javelin and 1500 meters.

Day 7, Aug 9th - 110H, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin, 1500m
Decathlon Records:
World Record - 9039 - Ashton Eaton (USA), June 22-23, 2012
Olympic Record - 8893 - Roman Sebrle (CZE), Aug 24, 2004
American Record - 9039 - Ashton Eaton (USA), June 22-23, 2012
The Favorites: (personal best/season best)
1. Ashton Eaton, USA (9039/9039) - Eaton has had an impressive season to say the least. He broke the world record and leads all other competitors by nearly 500 points, but can he do it outside of Eugene?
2. Trey Hardee, USA (8790/8383) - Hardee hasn't hit a PB since 2009, but he's the two time defending world champ and an all around beautiful specimen. I expect to see some game day results from this one.
3. Pascal Behrenbruch, Germany (8558/8558) - Can't ever count a German out. Currently 2nd on the world list, I'd expect a strong performance to wrap up this PB season.
The Americans:
1. Ashton Eaton (9039/9039) - Clear favorite and engaged to Brianne Theisen
2. Trey Hardee (8790/8383) - Let's see if this former Longhorn can find his way to that elusive Olympic podium.

2012 London Olympic Games
Decathlon Schedule:
Day 6, Aug 8th - 100m, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 400m
