Boston Marathon Suspect Caught and Arrested
Two hours after the lockdown of Boston was lifted, the manhunt for the second Boston Marathon bombing suspect ended with police cornering and capturing 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on Friday night.
Confirmation of the arrest was made by the Boston Police's official Twitter account at 8:45 p.m. ET. Mayor Tom Menino also tweeted, "We got him." He was arrested at 9:30 p.m.
Just over an hour earlier, residents reported hearing shots fired in the Watertown neighborhood. Tsarnaev was hiding and sitting up in a boat next to a home on Franklin Street. Authorities headed to the area after recieving a tip indicating blood was seen on the boat.
The stand off was executed carefully as police were afraid the suspect may have attached a suicide bomb to himself. It ended approximately an hour and a half after police arrived.
Tsarnaev was rushed to a local hospital after police got him in custody. Three other people were taken into custody by Newbedford police as part of their investigation earlier in the day. The two men and woman in custody are believed to be fellow students at UMass-Dartmouth, where Tsarnaev was also a student.
The other suspect, Tasmerian Tsarnaev (26-year-old and brother of Dzhokhar), in the Boston Marathon bombings was killed early in the morning by police after a confrontation resulted in exchanged gunfire.
Author's note: As the United States celebrates the capturing of the second Boston Marathon suspect, we must not forget the lives lost on Marathon Monday and Officer Sean Collier, who was shot and killed last night.
