Nothing Ever Looks That Good on Paper, Right? (TX State Distance Preview)
We've already seen why Everything's Faster in Texas, but what about those legendary distance programs? In this preview, we wish that Texas combined state classes, ask "Can Southlake Carroll win two 1600m state titles," and remind you that we still remember cross country.

If we had one wish, it would be to bump Atlanta’s Chris Ibarra up from class 3A to 5A. Even though he took second at Arcadia in 1:50.30, there isn’t many more preps in front of him on the national list (answer: he’s third). We loved watching him run at New Balance Indoor Nationals, where he took second, but finally had a front seat to watch him in-person when he kicked for home at the Texas Relays.

Ibarra should have an easy time defending his title, but the next four fastest 800m runners in the Lone Star State are all in class 5A. That race is a toss-up as the favorites are all within a half of a second of one another (times are below).

If Ibarra was in the mix, then this would be the race of the day.

Girl’s 800m

You’ll be missed, Kinkaid’s Raevyn Rogers. The junior with the fastest time in the state  from way back on March 23rd (2:09.40) hasn’t run since. We don’t know what’s kept her out from competition (it could be injury, it could also be anything else), but it’s too bad that that was the end.

Editor's Note: Kinkaid is a private school, so she can't compete in the UIL. Also thanks.

The big show will be in class 5A. The favorite, The Woodlands’ Katie Willard, has had a quiet spring, but has come into form at the right time. Willard has seldom raced this outdoor season with only five races under her belt, but like Ibarra, we’ve seen what she can do in person. This winter at the Brooks PR Invitational, Willard ran tactically sound race to take second in 2:09.89.

She’ll be up against Clear Springs’ Tiffany Terry and Clear Falls’ Keon Roberson, both of whom just ran against each other at the Region 3-5A meet.

Down in 4A, Canyon’s Arin Rice is the pre-race favorite, but it won’t be a cakewalk for her. The Texas Christian University bound senior is coming off her best race of the outdoor season (2:12.25), but there’s four girls that are nearly a second away from being the number one seed.

Check out who could challenge for the win below.

Boy’s 1600m
This one is a good ol’ Mexican standoff between three of the best milers in the nation.

The nod has to go to one of Flotrack’s favorite milers, Trevor Gilley. This winter, we saw the Southlake Carroll senior absolutely man-handle some of the nation’s best at the Brooks PR where he took the win in 4:08.24. A few weeks later, Gilley made the trip to New York (good thing TX is right in the middle of the U.S.) to grab second at New Balance Indoor Nationals in 4:08.37.

He’s been on fire this spring and enters the state meet as the favorite, on paper.

Sorry about the volume.

His biggest challenge will come from his future teammate at the University of Mississippi, Robert Domanic. The Lewisville Hebron senior is also one of Flotrack’s favorites because back in the fall, he accomplished the national double. Unless cross country has been so far removed that you forgot that there’s two national championships, well Domanic joined an elite club and ran both.

First at Nike Cross Nationals, Domanic braved the mud to take 5th in 17:22. Then a week later, he went over to sunny California to take 15th at Foot Locker Nationals. What can we say - the guy loves all-American honors.

We’re not going to base any decision from success during from the fall, but we know the guy is a bit of a baller.

If character isn’t a convincing enough factor for why he’ll be a tough opponent, Domanic is coming off his best mile of the season (4:11.23).

Where did he run his best time of the season? At the Region 1-5A meet, where he took down Gilley and lead three guys under Colby Lowe’s meet record of 4:12.39.

We would normally take Domanic, but we’re still basking in Gilley’s Brooks PR performance. Revenge is a dish best served cold at the TX State Meet.

Edit: Watch out for Ole Miss in the next few years. They’re a program on the rise and have an excellent coaching staff.

While we think those two will duke it out, we can’t forget about Arlington Martin’s Cameron Villarreal. The Texas A&M bound senior took third behind Gilley and Domanic at the Region 1-5A meet, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be looking to reverse that result on Saturday.

Note: There’s no easy road to the Texas State Meet. We would’ve liked to see Southlake Carroll’s Joe Sansone and Keller’s Austen Dalquist in this race, but they took 6th and 5th respectively at the Region 1-5A meet. Villarreal took down both of them to punch his ticket to the state meet.

A small reminder that no one can run a fast mile in the rain.

Girl’s 1600m
After this weekend, Southlake Carroll very well might have matching 1600m state titles. In the girl’s race, US#12 Courtney Kriegshauser looks to defend her title, but as always, it won’t be easy.

The next three fastest Texans are all in the same class (5A) with Kriegshauser. That trio would be Kingwood’s Sandie Raines, The Woodlands’ Madi McLellan, and Katie Jensen.

While Raines opened up her spring with a 4:52.14 win at the Atascocita Invitational, that mark still remains her seasonal best. Even though she hasn’t run any faster, we did see her edge out a close win at the Texas Relays 3200m (10:18.98). We figure her focus will be on that distance as she won the 3200m at Regionals, but took third in the 1600m.

Then there’s the teammates, McLellan and Jensen. We also saw the pair at the Brooks PR 3200, where they McLellan held off Jensen to take sixth and seventh, respectively. Even though McLellan hasn’t raced very often this spring, she did beat Jensen at their Regional meet.

While we’re trying to convince you of who might win, we totally forgot to explain why we mentioned Kriegshauser in the first place. The Vanderbilt bound senior not only comes to Austin, TX with the fastest PR, but hasn’t lost a 1600 race all spring. Similar to many other Texans, we’ve seen what Kriegshauser is capable of doing as she took 6th at the Brooks PR mile in 4:50.94.

Could Southlake win both 1600m state titles?

Again, it’s Gilley and Domanic who lead the way (Sansone unfortunately didn’t make it in the 3200m, either). The double is tough with the 3200m being at 9:00am and the 1600m at 2:45pm, but it’s definitely doable.

On paper, Gilley still has the edge over Domanic. But just like in the mile at their Regional meet, Domanic took the win over his intrastate rival.

We’ll give the edge to Domanic in the 3200m.

If this race came after the mile, we would have said that El Paso Franklin’s Brian Barraza was the favorite. The senior took third behind the two Texas studs in a personal best of 9:05.24 at Regionals. Watch out for him.

Girl’s 3200m
While the 5A race is all Sandie Raines (she should watch out for Justin NW’s Kellee McCann, though), the real action will be in 4A.

This one should be a doozy as the second, third, and fourth fastest in the state go head-to-head. We’re talking about Highland Park’s Natalie Rathjen, Leander Rouse’s Madie Boreman, and Burleson High’s Jessica Prickett (their marks are below).

Remember when we said that Raines captured a close victory at the Texas Relays 3200? Well, that win was over Rathjen, who took second in 10:19.54. Back a few seconds in third? Prickett in 10:26.57.

Boreman has had a quiet spring, except for a second place finish at the Tracy Willis Meet in 10:24.62.

The girl who won? Rathjen in 10:21.91. We’ll give her the nod.
