Boston Marathon Invites Non-Finishers Back for 2014
After two explosions went off near the Boston Marathon finish line on April 15, 5,633 runners were robbed of the opportunity to complete a marathon they worked hard to qualify for. The Boston Athletic Association announced they will welcome back those runners prevented from finishing for the 2014 Boston Marathon.
"The opportunity to run down Boylston Street and to cross the finish line amid thousands of spectators is a significant part of the entire Boston Marathon experience," BAA executive director Tom Grilk said in the press release by B.A.A, "With the opportunity to return and participate in 2014, we look forward to inviting back these athletes and we expect that most will renew their marathon training commitment. Boston spectators are known for their impassioned support and unbridled enthusiasm, and they will give these returning athletes some of the loudest cheers at next year's race. We want to thank our participants for their patience as we continue to work through the details of arranging this accommodation for them, and we ask for continued patience from the running community as we plan the 2014 Boston Marathon next April."
One of the requirements for runners that did not finish is that they at least reached the half-marathon mark before being stopped.
Registration for the 2014 Boston Marathon is slated to open in September. Those eligible for the re-entry from the 2013 Boston Marathon have been emailed about their status.
The Boston Athletic Association has recieved a lot of interest from runners asking how big the 2014 race will be, but that has yet to be determined. Communication will take place with partners and public safety officials before a race plan is in place or changes are determined.
