As exciting as the first two days were at New Balance Outdoor Nationals (NBON), the third and final day was also jam-packed with some nail biting performances and a handful of meet records at North Carolina A & T's Aggie Stadium
The story of the day and of the meet was written by senior Wesley Frazier. Frazier, not to far from her hometown of Raleigh, won the Girls 1 Mile Championship completing the triple crown for the weekend. On Friday night she won the 5,000-meter Championship and yesterday Frazier was crowned the 2-mile victor.
The future Duke Blue Devil not only finished her final event of the weekend with a bang, but also her high school career. Frazier won in 4:39.66 besting second place Josette Norris of Tenafly, NJ by nearly nine seconds.
The 4x 1 Mile Relay was the first event of the day. And what better way to start the final day of competition with one of those meet records. Red Tide Track Club out of Michagain took the title with a winning time of 17:16.12. They just snuck under the previous meet record set four years ago by Reed Connor's The Woodlands by 1.09 seconds.
Anchor Brian Kettle got the batton in fourth place, but battled his way up to the front closing in a 4:13.39 for the win. Kettle had the second fastest split behind a 4:09.03 from Bismarck's Jake Leingang and Middlesex's James Randon (4:12.53). Those two teams got 6th and 8th respectively.
The 400-meter Hurdles concluded with Marlon Humphrey of Birmingham, AL winning in 50.25. The junior was 0.70 seconds away from tieing the Washington Redskins' quarterback, Robert Griffin III's class record of 49.56.
Food for thought: What if RGIII pursued a career in track and field? We can only wonder what that would be like for the NFL's Rookie of the Year (2012).
The Men's 800-meter would mark another meet record. John Crossley from Atlantic Beach, NC ran a 1:48.01 beating Austin Mudd's (All-American from the University of Wisonsin) previous record of 1:48.09 set two years ago.
