William and Mary Director of Cross Country and Track and Field
Stephen Walsh announced the hiring of John Jefferson to the position of assistant coach today, just in time for the start of the 2013-14 campaign.  Jefferson's duties with the Tribe will include assisting with the training of all 102 athletes in their respective disciplines, with an emphasis on the distance and middle distance athletes, as well as helping ensure the smooth administrative functioning of W&M's nationally-reknowned program.

"We're excited to be adding a person with John's background and achievements to our staff," said Walsh.  "In the hiring process we felt that John's experiences both in college and as a professional athlete afterwards were things that our athletes will really respond to, and that he will be an incredibly valuable resource for them to have access to."

Jefferson has spent the past seven years as a professional runner and assistant coach with a variety of post-collegiate clubs, and established himself in the upper tier of American middle-distance elites.  He first worked with the Oregon Track Club under Frank Gagliano and (later) Mark Rowland, qualifying for the USAT&F Championships three times each indoors and outdoors.  Since 2010, Jefferson has been with Team Indiana Elite as both an athlete and a coach, helping develop training plans, racing schedules, and assisting Dr. Robert Chapman and Stephen Haas at day-to-day practices and specialized altitude training camps.

His athletic career highlights include reaching the semifinals of the 1,500m at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Trials, as well as finishing eighth in the 1,500m at the 2007 national championships.  Indoors, his best finish so far was sixth in the 1,500m in 2010.  Jefferson has run 3:39.39 for the 1,500m (coming in 2011), and 3:56.86 in the mile with four sub-4 performances.

Jefferson ran collegiately at Indiana, earning three All-American honors in the mile indoors.  In 2002-03, as a sophomore, he was the Big Ten Rookie of the Year in cross country, before going on indoors to win the Big Ten title in the mile and finish second at the NCAA Championships.  In 2005, he and his brother, Sean, both broke the 4-minute barrier for the first time and finished 1-2 in the same race, making NCAA history as the first twins ever to accomplish that feat in the same race.  He graduated in 2006 with a degree in public management, and a certificate in business.

John and his wife, Stephanie (a 2011 Virginia graduate and professional runner) reside in Williamsburg.
