Big Changes at the Top in Latest Division I Regional Rankings

NEW ORLEANS - The first big weekend in Division I cross country has come and gone, leaving in its wake some major shake-ups in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Regional Rankings released Monday.
A quartet of national top-11 men’s teams were dethroned from their regional favorite status, while a pair of new No. 1 teams emerged in the women’s regions, made possible by the overthrow in the West of defending national champion Oregon — all of which will make for an interesting new edition of the National Coaches Polls Tuesday.
REGIONAL PDFs: Regional Summary | Week-by-Week | Division I XC Rankings Central
The most significant move on the men’s side came from the Mountain Region, where Colorado’s men, ranked third nationally, seized control of a loaded region from Northern Arizona, ranked No. 2 nationally. The Buffaloes were strong in their home Rocky Mountain Shootout, while Northern Arizona suffered an early-season loss to No. 1 Oklahoma State at the Cowboy Jamboree.
The nationally third-ranked women’s team — defending champion Oregon — was also on the move in the regional rankings, but in the opposite direction of the Buffaloes. Despite a runner-up showing to national No. 1 Providence at Boston College’s Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown, the Ducks were overtaken by Arizona (No. 5 nationally) after the Wildcats dominated a Roy Griak field that included seven other nationally ranked DI teams and the top two squads from Division II.
Beantown last Friday was also the impetus for a pair of new No. 1 men’s teams. Oregon (No. 12 nationally), led by a pair of first-year runners in Edward Cheserek and Jake Leingang going 1-2 and without several key team members, trounced a field with three other nationally-ranked teams to jump two spots to No. 1 in the West Region. The Ducks moved past Portland (No. 7) and UCLA (No. 13).
Conversely, Wisconsin (No. 8 nationally) turned in a disappointing fourth-place showing at the Battle in Beantown, resulting in the Badgers’ slide down to No. 2 in the Great Lakes Region behind Indiana (No. 18).
In the Southeast Region, Eastern Kentucky (No. 11 nationally) was defeated by North Carolina at the Virginia Panorama Farms Invitational in a move that reflected itself in the regional rankings. The Tar Heels, who have not yet been nationally ranked this season, jumped three spots to No. 1 to displace EKU to No. 2.
Rounding out the new top-ranked regional squads is the Oklahoma State women (No. 22 nationally) moving to No. 1 in the Midwest Region, displacing Minnesota (No. 19). The Cowboys were winners at their home Jamboree, while the Golden Gophers were fourth at their home Roy Griak Invitational.
In other significant women’s regional rankings moves, Virginia jumped three spots to No. 2 in the Southeast Region ahead of William and Mary (No. 14 nationally) after beating the Tribe at the Virginia Panorama Farms Invitational, and behind ACC rival Duke (No. 4). Meanwhile Butler (No. 29) overtook Notre Dame (No. 18) for the third spot in the Great Lakes Region.
