Dickinson Men & SUNY Geneseo Women Overtake National Top-10 Teams in DIII Regional Rankings
By Kyle Terwillegar, USTFCCCA
October 8, 2013
NEW ORLEANS – In a pair of moves that will likely have national ramifications, Dickinson’s men and SUNY Geneseo’s women have overtaken the top spots in their respective regions in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Regional Rankings released Tuesday.
REGIONAL PDFs: Regional Summary | Week-by-Week | Division III XC Rankings Central
Dickinson (No. 8 nationally) seized control of the Mideast Region from Haverford (No. 3), while SUNY Geneseo (No. 13) jumped past St. Lawrence (No. 10) into the driver’s seat in the Atlantic Region. With multiple top-10 national spots involved, these moves could manifest themselves in Wednesday’s Division III National Coaches Polls.
A head-to-head victory over Haverford at the Paul Short Run was the impetus of Dickinson’s rise to the top, as the Red Devils turned in a 27th-place showing at the meet’s Gold division, good for second among DIII squads behind Williams (No. 9 nationally).
Haverford finished 30th as a team at Paul Short to drop to No. 2 in the region. The Fords have claimed the past three regional titles — including last year’s at Dickinson — and six of the past eight.
SUNY Geneseo’s women took the title at its home Geneseo Invitational to charge past St. Lawrence into the Atlantic Region’s top spot. The race between the two squads is still tight, as Geneseo received seen of the region’s 12 first-place votes, while St. Lawrence received the remaining five.
St. Lawrence, which finished 44th in the Paul Short Run’s Gold division race to fall to No. 2 in the region, has claimed each of the past four regional titles. Prior to that run, Geneseo claimed at least a share of the previous five.
SUNY Geneseo’s men (No. 35 nationally) also made a strong move toward the top of their region, jumping up three spots to No. 2 with two of the region’s 14 first-place votes. NYU (No. 11) remains No. 1 in the region.
Elsewhere in the regional rankings:
- Central (Iowa) (No. 31 nationally), the preseason favorite in the Central Region, moved up two spots to No. 2 following a third-place finish at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational, including two top-four collegiate finishers in Austin O’Brien and Eli Horton.
- Williams (No. 9 nationally) and Bates (No. 14) each moved up a spot in the men’s New England Region as Bowdoin (No. 6) dropped two spots to No. 4 in the region.
- Trinity (Texas)’s men dropped from No. 2 to No. 4 in the South/Southeast Region, bumping Emory to the second spot and Christopher Newport to third.
- St. Olaf’s women (No. 19 nationally) moved up one spot to No. 2 in the Central Region following a third-place team finish at the Blugold Invitational, swapping positions with Carleton (No. 15 nationally), which finished fifth as a team at UW-Eau Claire.
- Haverford’s men may has dropped to No. 2 in the Mideast Region, but the program’s women (No. 25 nationally) moved up two spots to the second spot in the region after finishing 30th in the Paul Short Run’s Gold division race as a team.
NCAA Division III Regionals will be held Sunday, November 16. More information can be found at Regional Championships Central.
