Oscar Pistorius now faces two additional firearm charges

When Oscar Pistorius was indicted on premeditated murder charges earlier this fall, rumors swirled that the South African Olympian and Paralympian would also be charged with multiple other firearms violations. The indictment hearing came and went without those rumors coming to fruition. On Tuesday morning, the state carried out what many expected them to do months ago. Pistorius is now charged with two additional firearms violations prior to his trial in early 2014.

Pistorius is charged with murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentines Day. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

The charges stem from two separate events, including one in which Pistorius fired a hand gun into the air, not at any person, while in a moving vehicle.

It is unclear whether the additional charges will affect the trial’s current March 3rd start date.

Analysis by Leverington: The state is likely bringing the additional, relatively insignificant charges as a strategic maneuver to paint Pistorius as having a history of being fast and loose with firearms.
