The UW-La Crosse not only emerged victorious at the USTFCCCA DIII National Meet of the Week, the UW-Whitewater Leonard "Squig" Converse Invitational, but the Eagles also managed to cushion their team rankings score advantage over the rest of the country.
En route to defeating a field in the team competition at UW-Whitewater that featured No. 4 UW-Whitewater, No. 5 North Central (Ill.) and No. 7 UW-Oshkosh, the Eagles recorded two new top-10 national marks with John Cooper’s third-ranked weight throw performance and Joe DeRosier’s No. 9 performance in the 60-meter hurdles.

Those two particular performances were key in improving UW-La Crosse’s team rankings score by 9.5 points to 225.04.
Compounding the Eagles’ improvement were decreased team rankings scores for No. 2 UW-Eau Claire (141.67), No. 3 Mount Union (128.74) and No. 4 UW-Whitewater (107.53).
North Central improved two spots from a week ago, largely behind the strength of John Crain’s top-ranked mile performance.
Haverford (103.80) remained steady at No. 6, while UW-Oshkosh (94.19) dropped two spots from a week ago to No. 7.
No. 8 Monmouth (Ill.) (67.10), No. 9 MIT (60.76) and No. 10 Bates (58.22) rounded out the top 10.
Women’s No. 1 Wartburg may have fallen to new No. 2 UW-La Crosse at the Wartburg Indoor Select this past weekend, but the Knights were able to hold off the Eagles from claiming the top spot in the rankings.
The National Team Computer Rankings do not necessarily predict performance in a smaller meet – in this case seven teams – but rather aim to project team performance at a large, top-heavy National Championship meet.

In fact, despite losing 290½ – 208, Wartburg was able to record enough top-tier marks to improve its team rankings score by 12.78 points to an even 185.00. The bulk of that improvement came via Libbey Schubert’s second-ranked performance at 200 meters.
UW-La Crosse used the same meet to generate a 35.51-point improvement to its team rankings score, which checked in at 146.38. The Eagles were powered by Jaime Ludwigson’s top-ranked performance at 200 meters and No. 3 triple jumper Bria Halama.
MIT (133.25) dropped a spot to No. 3 to make way for UW-La Crosse, while No. 4 UW-Oshkosh (107.59), No. 5 Williams (93.62) and No. 6 UW-Whitewater (92.32) all remained put.
Two-time defending cross country champion Johns Hopkins (82.59) improved three spots to No. 7.
No. 8 St. Thomas (Minn.) (82.04), No. 9 Emory (62.44) and No. 10 Washington (Mo.) (62.12) completed the top 10.
The Dickinson men took the title of "biggest mover" this week with a 45-spot improvement to No. 21, while the Westminster (Pa.) women jumped up 19 positions to No. 17.
The national team rankings will be complied by mathematical formulae based on national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons. For the preseason ranking and early-season rankings, data will be taken from previous seasons as well as the current season.
The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race. Rankings points do not equate with NCAA Championships team points. A full description of the rankings can be found here.
The USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings should not be referred to as a “poll” as no voting occurs during the process.
A significant wild card in these projections are the addition of the 200 meters and 3000 meters as events at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships for the first time. Data from the 2013 used for preseason marks do not include marks made in those two events, but marks from the current 2014 season in those events have been included.
