NEW ORLEANS – The song remained the same atop the third regular-season edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III National Team Computer Rankings released Wednesday, as defending men’s champion UW-La Crosse and the Wartburg women held firm at No. 1.

Both the Eagles and Knights stayed above the fray of movement that afflicted much of the men’s and women’s rankings. That shuffling will only be amplified in next week’s edition of the National Team Computer Rankings with the removal of preseason data – the best marks of 2013 – from the equation.

On the men’s side UW-La Crosse (214.79 team rankings score), No. 2 UW-Eau Claire (145.18) and No. 3 Mount Union (120.00) kept steady.

UW-Oshkosh (112.71) moved the highest, improving three positions from last week to No. 4. The Titans were boosted by McKena Ramos with the No. 3 qualifying spot in the mile and Zachary Baehman with the No. 4 position in the shot put at their  home Titan Open.

Haverford (98.04) stepped up one spot to break into the top five. UW-Whitewater (96.74) was displaced two slots to No. 6 behind UW-Oshkosh and Haverford.

The Jumbos of Tufts (83.81) made a big five-spot move to No. 7, largely behind a top-ranked 400 meter and fifth-ranked 200 meters performance from Graham Beutler.

No. 8 North Central (Ill.) (82.27) fell three spots, No. 9 MIT (75.74) stayed in place, and No. 10 Monmouth (Ill.) (82.27) slid two spots to round out the top 10.

No. 24 Baldwin Wallace was the biggest gainer of the week, up 19 positions from last time.

In the women’s rankings, No. 1 Wartburg (185.33), No. 2 UW-La Crosse (146.92), No. 3 MIT (121.99) and defending champion No. 4 UW-Oshkosh (103.05) all remained in place from a week ago.

From that point on, however, all but one team is in a different spot than last time, starting with No. 5 UW-Whitewater (91.67) up one position. Williams (86.93) swapped spots with the Warhawks at No. 6.

Another pair of teams swapping places was No. 7 St. Thomas (Minn.) (76.37) edging ahead of No. 8 Johns Hopkins (76.36) by just the narrowest of margins.

No. 9 Wheaton (Mass.) (62.97) improved two positions, while No. 10 Amherst (61.52) improved eight spots and made its first top-10 appearance since the beginning of the USTFCCCA rankings in 2010.

No. 21 RPI made the biggest improvement with a 11-spot jump, just ahead of No. 24 Springfield (Mass.)’s nine-slot increase behind National Athlete of the Week Gabriella Gaudreault.

The national team rankings will be complied by mathematical formulae based on national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons. For the preseason ranking and early-season rankings, data will be taken from previous seasons as well as the current season.

The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race. Rankings points do not equate with NCAA Championships team points. A full description of the rankings can be found here.

The USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings should not be referred to as a “poll” as no voting occurs during the process.

A significant wild card in these projections are the addition of the 200 meters and 3000 meters as events at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships for the first time. Data from the 2013 used for preseason marks do not include marks made in those two events, but marks from the current 2014 season in those events have been included.
