Tyson Gay suspended one year

On Friday afternoon, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency announced that Tyson Gay has accepted a one-year suspension and vacated all results from raced dating back to July 15, 2012. The 31-year-old tested positive for an anabolic steroid in an out-of-competition test from May 2013. The news of his positive test surfaced on July 14 along with five other athletes from Jamaica.

Gay has already returned his silver medal from the men’s 4x100-meter relay at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. With the disqualification of the American team, the national record changes from 37.04 to 37.40 from the 1993 World Championships. He has been stripped of all medals, points and prizes from competitions since July 15, 2012.

Gay was the 2013 U.S. Outdoor Champion over 100-meters and 200-meters and was getting ready for the IAAF World Championships in Moscow. His last race was on July 4 as he win the 100-meter dash in 9.79 at the Lausanne Diamond League Meeting.

Since his positive test, USADA says Gay cooperated with their investigation and disclosed a list of all the products he used at the time of the positive test.

“We appreciate Tyson doing the right thing by immediately withdrawing from competition once he was notified, accepting responsibility for his decisions, and fully and truthfully cooperating with us in our ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his case,” said USADA CEO Travis T. Tygart.

Gay’s suspension began on June 23, 2013, which was the date in which his sample was collected from the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines. He could return in time for the Lausanne, Paris, London, Monaco, Stockholm, Birmingham, Zurich and Brussels Diamond League meetings.

Update: 4:05 p.m. - According to Sara Germano of the Wall Street Journal, USATF said that if Tyson Gay has no qualifying marks for the 2014 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships, he could petition for inclusion before the June 16 deadline.
