Analyisis:
The internet definition of cavalier is as follows: a gallant man, a soldier, a knight, etc. Returning junior Kyle King definitely qualifies under this definintion. Tougher than nails, King’s well balanced resume between cross country and track was as good as any Virginia Cavalier in recent memory. He was 18th in last year’s national meet, which happens to be the highest finish ever by a University of Virginia male runner. He then went to the track and repeated his All-American status with a steeplechase of 8:41, making him one of the top Americans at the meet. King is now experienced as well as a gamer and leader for Coach Peter Watson’s men. And there are some nice pieces to back King up with as well.

Sophomore Adam Visokay, if he can follow up on his very good track season, 7:57 for 3k and 29:14 for 10k, will trump last year’s 123rd place for sure. He should be number two behind King. Junior Christopher Foley, 14:03 for 5k, and sophomore Zach Herriott, who was 93rd last year as a freshman, complete a very solid top four.

So who will be Coach Watson’s fifth?

Will it be sophomore Thomas Madden who managed a 156th finish last year to go with a 29:54 on the track, or will it be one of the incoming freshman?

Look for Brent Demarest of South Carolina who was 28th and 25th in his two Footlocker appearances, and perhaps Kenneth Hagen, a Blacksburg, Virginia runner (how did they steal him away from Virginia Tech?) whose 4:10 for 1600m reflects good speed to battle for that all important fifth position.

Either way, the Virginia men will be good, but they will probably be hard pressed to duplicate last year’s 13th place. But they have a King for a Cavalier so perhaps anything is possible.
