Analysis:
Head coach Todd Morgan was selected the 2013 Southeast Region Coach of the Year after his Cavalier team took the championship. Don’t count him out for a repeat. Morgan returns three girls who finished in the top 100 at last year’s NCAA Championship. Sophomore Maria Hauger, who had a very nice 16:14 on the track as a freshman and will be called upon to lead the team in 2014.

Canadian Cleo Boyd justified her transfer from Stony Brook with an even 100th, and senior Kathleen Stevens is around to steady the ship and become what might be Morgan’s number two girl.

Those three have some nice backup talent to challenge them with both Jennifer Flack and Sarah Fakler (both sophomores) and showing strength with their low 34 minutes 10k’s on the track last spring.

Throw University of Birmingham (UK) grad-student transfer, Iona Lake, into the mix and Virginia has the depth to do good things in Terre Haute and give the Southeast Region coaches headaches again this year.

Morgan has done a nice job of bringing his young recruits along at a pace that they seem to be able to handle. This allows them to stay healthy and still contribute to the team. Don’t be too surprised if his two Virginia High School stars, Katherine Benfer and Megan Rebholz, manage to crack his top seven later in the fall season.

Both men’s and women’s teams are very good.  Both coaches are talented and good motivators. That kind of synergy can often lift teams beyond their normal potential. It could happen in Charlottesville this year.
