Beijing 2015 Standards Announced
Beijing 2015 Standards Announced
On Wednesday, the IAAF announced the qualifying standards and procedures for the 2015 IAAF World Championship in Beijing, China.
One key difference in the 2015 standards is that the IAAF has established "the ideal number of athletes (and relay teams) to start in each event of the championships and shall ensure that such ideal numbers are met through a qualification system which, essentially, combines entry standards (only one standard) and invitations based on rankings."
Athletes can punch their ticket to China in several ways: 1) Hitting an entry standard set forth below. 2) Qualifying by placing at specific competitions. 3) Being the defending champion or Diamond League series champion. If there are two athletes from the same country, only one will be selected through this rule. 4) Remaining spots can be filled by the best-ranked athletes in certain events.
Relays also have their own set of qualifying procedures.
The qualifying period opened on Jan. 1 for 10,000-meter run, marathon, race walk, relays and combined events. All other events opened up on Oct. 1. The deadline to hit these standards is Aug. 10, 2015.
All rules and procedures can be found in greater detail on the IAAF website.
