Tyson Gay Training With John Smith

Former Olympic silver medalist Tyson Gay left the training group of Lance Brauman in Clermont, Florida and joined the training group of John Smith in Los Angeles this week, as confirmed by our sources on Thursday and reported by ESPN on Friday.

Last summer, Gay completed a one-year ban for a 2013 positive doping test that stripped him of the Olympic silver medal won as part of the 4x100m relay in London. He returned to sprinting last July after testing positive for a banned anabolic steroid. Along with the Olympic silver medal, Gay had his results from July 2012 wiped out. He received a reduced suspension after admitting the offense and cooperating with investigators on the case.

Smith has coached former world record-holder and Olympic champion Maurice Greene and four-time Olympic medalist Ato Bolton. He currently trains 2011 World 100m champion Carmelita Jeter.

One of Gay’s former coaches, Jon Drummond was recently suspended for eight years by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for doping violations.

Gay, the American record-holder in the 100m and joint second-fastest man of all-time at 9.69 seconds, hopes to make the U.S. team for the 2015 World Championships in Beijing this August.

More details to come.
