Tucson Elite Classic: Joe Kovacs Ready For World Dominance

Joe Kovacs competes in the 2015 Doha Diamond League meeting shot put
Joe Kovacs was the top thrower in the U.S. in 2014 and leads the World in 2015

Joe Kovacs Is The Man

Headlining the shot will be 2015 World-leader and 2014 U.S. champion Joe Kovacs, who has already thrown 22.35m in 2015, and has put his hat in the ring as a favorite later this summer at World Champs. The 25-year-old has chucked the rock a full two feet further than anyone else this year, and is nearing the top ten on the all-time list. If seeing a man throw a 16 lb object over 73 feet is your cup of tea, then you should plan on being near a computer this Saturday.

Watch Kovacs "Warm-Up" with a nice 24.29m toss:

Plenty of other objects will be flying through the air and broadcast on your preferred device.

Three-time Olympian A.G. Kruger brings a wealth of experience to the men’s hammer throw compettion, and the 36-year-old currently ranks #2 in the US with a 75.86m toss. For those of you keeping score at home, that’s a 248ft throw with a 16lb hammer. Not too shabby in my book.

A.G. Kruger was the 2015 USATF weight throw champion

Four-time NCAA shot put champion Tia Brooks headlines the women’s shot competition on Saturday. Brooks is currently ranked 3rd in the U.S. and 6th in the World with her 18.72m toss in 2015.

In the women’s discus, American record holder Stephanie Brown Trafton was the Olympic champion in Beijing. Trafton’s record of 67.74m has stood since 2012, but the 35-year-old who is coming back from childbirth, will be looking for her first 60m since then.

Indian discus national record holder Vikas Gowda has finished in the top 10 at consecutive World Championships, and currently ranks seventh in the world with his 65.75m throw from April.
