Top 10 NCAA Distance Transfers

Every year the NCAA running world gets flipped upside down when big name stars transfer to big name programs. 2015 will be no different as many teams will go into the upcoming collegiate season with new faces leading the charge.

1) Courtney Frerichs (UMKC to New Mexico)

NCAA Cross Country (13th)
NCAA Indoor 5K (5th)
NCAA Outdoor 3K Steeple (2nd)
5K: 15:47
3K Steeple: 9:31

This is huge! New Mexico’s cross country team is now officially insanely good! Frerichs will join a roster with Alice Wright (20th NCAA XC), Calli Thackery (6th NCAA 5K), and Rhona Auckland (19th IAAF World XC). This will certainly be the year of the New Mexico Lady Lobos come November.

2) Tre’tez Kinnaird (Indiana to Oklahoma State)

NCAA Indoor 800 (8th)
800: 1:47

While Kinnarid won’t be a factor for Oklahoma State’s cross country team, he joins a group of great middle distance runners that will make the Cowboys legit NCAA DMR contenders with Chad Noelle (1st NCAA 1500) and Matthew Fayers (sub-4 miler).

3) Luis Vargas (Elon to North Carolina State)

NCAA Cross Country (25th)
5K: 13:57

Vargas unfortunately is out of XC eligibility but he is an untapped talent on the track. While he has a modest 5K PR of 13:57, Vargas ran for Elon which was not eligible for the indoor or outdoor NCAA Championships. Look for Vargas to make the NCAA Championships on the track for the first time in his career with the Wolfpack.

4) Wesley Frazier (Duke to North Carolina State)

5K: 15:45

Wesley Frazier will join her sister Ryen Frazier (five star recruit) at North Carolina State. Wesley Frazier’s career was looking like it was going to be a complete bust. However, after redshirting this outdoor season, breaking 16:00 in the 5K, reuniting with her sister, and a change of scenery, Frazier should be a top contender in 2015-16. Look for her to become the Frazier we expected to see at Duke.

5) Brooke Feldmeier (Mississippi to Oregon)

NCAA Indoor 800 (8th)
NCAA Outdoor 800 (23rd)
800: 2:03

After losing Nikki Hiltz to Arkansas, Oregon reloads with SEC Champion Brooke Feldmeier who will join a young group of middle distance runners, notably Raevyn Rogers (1st NCAA 800m). Look for Feldmeier and Rogers to lead the charge for another track team title.

6) Meier Twins (Duke to Michigan)

Mile: 4:42 (Haley)
Mile: 4:40 (Hannah)

Joining Wesley Frazier in the exodus from Duke, Haley and Hannah Meier will join a solid Michigan team coming off a down year. Like Frazier the Meier twins struggled at Duke. Look for them to use Michigan as a place to contribute to a national contending program.

7) Tansey Lystad (Portland to Boise State)

NCAA Cross Country (15th)
NCAA Outdoor 5K (24th)
5K: 15:42

After competing at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and more recently for the Portland Pilots, Lystand is taking her talent to Boise State where she will compete in her final season of track eligibility. She is out of XC eligibility, but the veteran should help Boise State as they transition from the Emma Bates era into the Allie Ostrander era.

8) Collin Leibold (Georgetown to Stanford)

NCAA Outdoor 5K (13th)
1500: 3:42
3K: 8:00
5K: 13:54

Stanford just got their veteran fifth man in Collin Leibold. Stanford is going into this season with big expectations AKA put an end to Colorado’s XC winning streak. With the Rosa Twins, Sean McGorty, and Grant Fisher on the roster, look for Leibold to slide into the 5th-7th-man spot for the title-chasing Stanford Cardinal.

9) Meron Simon (Washington to North Carolina State)

NCAA Cross Country (154th)
NCAA Outdoor 3K Steeple (21st)
Mile: 4:02
3K Steeple: 8:48

We will never forget when Meron Simon did this. Simon is a veteran runner with national championship experience that will be key for the Wolfpack to return to the NCAA XC Championships.

10) Daniel Everett (Columbia to Iowa State)

NCAA Cross Country (187th)
Mile: 4:00
3K: 8:01
5K: 13:57

Daniel Everett does not have XC eligibilty but he does have NCAA Championship experience and will be a valued asset for Martin Smith during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
