The Boston Athletic Association is pleased to announce that NCAA All-American and NACAC silver medalist Daniel Winn has joined the B.A.A. High Performance Team, coached by Terrence Mahon. Winn, who graduated from the University of Oregon this year, brings speed and depth to the B.A.A., which is sponsored by adidas.
“Since my first phone call with Terrence this summer, talking about training philosophy and how I specifically could improve in the coming years, I thought the B.A.A. would be an ideal training situation,” said Winn. “I think the city of Boston and the B.A.A.’s resources will be an ideal fit for me, and I feel very lucky to get to join their High Performance team heading into the Olympic year.”
Originally from Portland, Oregon, Winn completed a standout career running for the University of Oregon in 2015. After joining the team as a freshman walk-on, Winn improved year after year, ultimately progressing to a national-caliber level. In his final two seasons sporting the Oregon uniform, Winn placed sixth at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships mile, and ninth at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships 1500 meters. Winn helped contribute to the pair of national team titles won by Oregon on the track in 2015.

In Boston as part of the B.A.A., Winn will join a growing middle-distance squad coached by Mahon. Among those who will train alongside Winn are Great Britain’s Chris O’Hare, an adidas sponsored athlete and two-time European Championships bronze medalist, as well as B.A.A. newcomer Samuel Ellison, who graduated from Villanova University in the spring.
Already, Winn has gained national and international experience in the months since graduating from the University of Oregon. At the USA Track & Field Championships, Winn placed seventh in the 1500m. He also set a 1500m personal best of 3:37.56 in July, and went on to claim the silver medal at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Winn boasts a mile lifetime best of 3:57.62, run indoors at the Washington Husky Classic this year. With the B.A.A. High Performance team, Winn joins a strong group of athletes specializing in distances ranging from 800 meters through the half marathon. Included on the team are three-time Olympian Jen Rhines, Katie Matthews, Emma Bates, Elaina Balouris, Juliet Bottorff, Sarah Pagano, and Emily Lipari.
The objective of the B.A.A.’s High Performance group of athletes is to support American runners on their way towards making international teams, with the goal of competing at an Olympic and World Championships level.
“Daniel joining the team helps to set in motion our desire to build out a top notch men’s program here at the B.A.A. Along with Chris O’Hare and Samuel Ellison, we now have the beginnings of a great middle distance group here in Boston. This blend of strength, speed and international experience will help to drive them all to greater heights,” said Mahon.
Winn will compete wearing the B.A.A.’s traditional yellow and blue adidas uniform, complete with the iconic unicorn logo.
