Women's Elite Beer Mile Rundown
From 40-year-old masters runners to professional post-collegiate athletes, the women’s beer mile field brings together a mix of competition ready to take on the ultimate championship of running and chugging.
Here’s a full rundown of the women’s field ready to toe the line at the FloTrack Beer Mile World Championships in Austin on Tuesday.
Battle of the Masters
Last year we saw the power of two veteran runners in Andrea Fisher and Chris Kimbrough. This Tuesday, the two athletes will return to the World Championships to try and improve upon their No. 2 and No. 3 marks in the world.
An Iron Man triathlon competitor, Fisher is riding her personal best of 6:28.2, which she ran at the 2014 World Championships for a runner-up finish. The 42-year-old multi-sport phenom was an 18-time All American while swimming for Texas and competed on the U.S. national team. These days, Fisher is focused on competing as a professional triathlete, working as the aquatics director for Townlake Austin YMCA, and raising her two daughters. Fisher is currently the masters world record-holder in the beer mile and looks to break six minutes at the championships, which would shatter the current world record of 6:17. Fisher even threw down a solid pre-race workout in preparation for the championships.
Fisher will face competition in former world record-holder Chris Kimbrough. The mom of six kids shocked the world last year when she shattered the women’s world record solo ahead of the 2014 championships. The 45-year-old Portland native’s personal best of 6:28 stands as the third-fastest mark in the world on BeerMile.com. Media outlets around the country reported on the record-breaking feat, setting the bar high for women attempting the event.
She is also an accomplished marathon runner with a 2:42 personal best over 26.2 and a 1:15 half marathon PR. Kimbrough will return to the championships this year to try and improve upon her fourth-place finish from last year.
The Top Returners
Jahn competes as a professional triathlete when she isn't running and chugging beer.
Professional triathlete Kristy Jahn is one of the top contenders returning to the championships. With a beer mile personal best of 6:48.9, Jahn is No. 10 on the BeerMile.com all-time list. The former Villanova track athlete boasts athletic accomplishments that include competing for the Canadian national team in the triathlon as well as the World Cross Country Championships.
Jahn will have stiff competition in competitor Juliane Masciana. The Austin native was fifth at the 2014 World Championships where she ran her personal best of 6:48.0. Masciana is a professional photographer who has competed in several USATF Outdoor Championships in the steeplechase. She holds personal bests of 16:19 in the 5K, 1:16 in the half marathon, and 10:59 in the steeplechase, which have translated very well to the beer mile.
Another top competitor that is set to return is Elizabeth Laseter, who is coming off of an eighth-place finish at the 2014 World Championships. Laseter holds a personal best of 7:03 in the beer mile, which she ran at the Circuit of the Americas last year. The event planner for the James Beard Foundation ran track for Johns Hopkins University and has been competing post-collegiately in the half marathon and road race distances.
All three ladies are poised to return for an even faster championship performance on Tuesday.
The Dark Horses
A newcomer to the beer mile, Erin O’Mara recently ran 6:40 at the Michigan beer mile regional meet, which stands as her fastest time to date. The Eastern Michigan graduate currently works as a buyer at Bauman’s Running and Walking Shop and runs marathons in her spare time. Her personal best of 2:43 qualified her for the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials. Watch O'Mara throw down a huge beer mile personal best at the regional meet:
Another formidable opponent, Lyndsay Harper will compete for the first time at the World Championships where she will seek to improve upon her personal best of 7:05, which she ran at the Beer Mile World Classic in San Francisco in August. The Berkeley, California native ran at Virginia and went on to compete for the Bay Area Track Club post-collegiately. She holds an 800m personal best of 2:03 and competed at the 2012 Olympic Trials.
