Brown "upsets" Solinsky

Brown "upsets" Solinsky
Russell Brown took the race last night, winning in a personal-best 3:35.70. Solinsky, the heavy favorite, performed well, but failed to hold off the miler Brown over the final 80 meters. Unofficial splits had Brown (well back of Solinsky with a lap to go) finishing the race with a 53-54 low range over the last 400!
It is exciting to have another young miler in Russell Brown taking that leap to the next level, as he continues to be a legit contender at stacked 1500/mile races. At this point, has he become "too legit to quit" winning big races? Perhaps.
Surprising to us was just how heavily favored Solinsky was going into this one. He was probably bound to be a slight favorite because of his 5k and 10 k credentials, but nearly half of all 1600 voters picked him to win over a deep field (including a few legit milers).
You would think that Brown was a close second in a lot of voters' books.
Miles Batty, recent NCAA winner, only received 8 percent of the votes. He battled with Solinsky and Brown until the final stretch, posting a huge 3:36.25 PR.
Of note : Fernandez (with 2nd most votes) did not run and Garrett Heath (4th most) did
not finish.
