The 109th NYRR Millrose Games will once again be a star-studded affair in New York City, which should really come as no surprise since The Armory-hosted event annually is one of the main attractions of the indoor season.
The city (never sleeps), the venue (historic), the fans (LOUD), and as always, the stud athletes (extraordinarily athletic) make Millrose must-see TV, with that last part being particularly crucial, because track is so rarely on TV! The atmosphere is always electric, and this yearÂ’s event figures to be even more buzzworthy than usual.
After all, the World Indoor Championships in Portland will take place just four weeks later, and ya know, itÂ’s an Olympic year. The Millrose Games will obviously benefit from that added intensity.
The 2016 showcase is slated for February 20th, with headliners such as decathlon world record holder Ashton Eaton, high jump World champ Derek Drouin, and a 5k American record-seeking Molly Huddle, among many others.
Eaton, he of World Greatest Athlete fame, will compete in the 60m and the long jump. Last year, the world held its collective breath when the multi-star flew over the mats a la Derek Jeter chasing a pop fly, but he was okay and you know the rest— Eaton broke his own decathlon world record in Beijing in August.
Up, up, and away went Ashton Eaton last year at The Armory
Aside from Huddle, distance fans can look forward to seeing NOPÂ’ers Jordan Hasay, Eric Jenkins, and American record holder Shannon Rowbury in action, as well Nicole Tully and Kerri Gallagher, two of 2015Â’s breakout stars.
Rowbury was a beast in 2015, and sheÂ’ll look to retain her Wanamaker Mile title.
adidasÂ’ Robby Andrews, fresh off by far the best season of his career, will bring his hard-kicking wheels to NYC for the fourth straight year. It will be the 24-year-old's first appearance in the Wanamaker Mile since 2013. We followed Andrews for this early season workout at The Armory last January, and heÂ’s been on fire ever since:
Coincidence? I think not.
Not to be outdone, sprint aficionados will get to see new Puma pros and 2015 NCAA 100m champions Jenna Prandini and Andre De Grasse make their respective Millrose debuts, a glimpse at the young faces that will eventually replace the Felixes and Bolts at the top of the sprint world. We caught up with De Grasse earlier this week just a few days after he signed a massive $11.25 million deal.
US middle distance star Ajee Wilson had a disappointing end to 2015 with an injury flaring up between USAs and Worlds, but sheÂ’s back and will look to win her third straight Millrose title in the 800m.
Of course, tons of stars yet to be named will be added to these fields which will only pump up the volume even more.
With U.S. Indoors only three weeks after Millrose, and the World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon just a week after that, The Armory will heat up several degrees hotter than usual as the athletes look to sharpen up for a super rare US-hosted international competition.
2016 is coming, you better be ready for it.
