Caster Semenya may consider the 400m-800m double at the 2016 Rio Olympics, according to a South African report.
The 2009 World Champion, 2011 World silver and 2012 Olympic silver medalist (Off topic, but Semenya could be upgraded to gold should Russian Mariya Savinova be stripped of her medals) recently ran 2:00.23 in Cape Town to nab an Olympic qualifier. It is her second fastest time in three years, as the South African has seen sparse success since 2012.
But after failing to make the 800m final last summer in Beijing, the 25-year-old is showing somewhat of an upward trajectory as her outdoor season is in full swing. She recorded a 400m personal best of 51.47 on March 12 (and even a 24.35 200m PB on March 1!).
With the added speed work, Semenya is considering the 400m-800m double in Rio.
“We haven’t decided yet (on running 400m at Olympics), but I hope so! But it’s not about me — it’s all about the teamwork with the guys and see if we can manage a five-day program without a rest,” Semenya told South African reporters after her 800m Olympic standard.
The double, though difficult, would be doable. Should she make the 400m final on August 15, Semenya would have one full day of rest before the first round of the 800m on August 17.
Semenya was the subject of gender tests after winning the 2009 World title at the age of 18. Her victory sparked controversy, and she was temporarily suspended from competing as the IAAF investigated her testosterone levels. In 2011, the IAAF rolled out new rules pertaining to hyperandrogenism, a condition that causes the overproduction of male sex hormones in females. Semenya has never been banned from competition or stripped of her medals.
The last woman to attempt this rare double was Australia's Tamsyn Manou at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She failed to advance to the 800m final after running 1:59.67 in the preliminary rounds and did not advance to the 400m semi-final.
