Oregon’s distance squad just got a little smaller as All American Waverly Neer was denied a fifth-year of eligibility after appealing to the NCAA.

Chris Hansen of the Register-Guard spoke with Oregon Head Coach Robert Johnson who confirmed the news. Johnson said that he was “100 percent” disappointed with the NCAA’s decision. Neer competed in one competition, the Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational, during the 2012 outdoor season that fell apparently one day after the NCAA deadline to redshirt.

“We appealed, we appealed, we appealed,” Johnson said, “and the NCAA deemed it she was not going to be granted a fifth year.”

Neer transferred to Oregon from Columbia in the fall of 2014. Since putting on an Oregon jersey, Neer has made an immediate, positive impact on the Duck squad. In her first cross country season, Neer finished 10th overall at the Pac-12 Conference Championships and went on to place 62nd at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

In the spring, Neer placed fifth in the 10K at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships, which helped the Ducks claim the NCAA team title.

This past fall, Neer claimed another All American honor at the NCAA Cross Country Championships by finishing 27th overall, which helped Oregon earn a top-three team spot on the podium.
