14-year-old Brandon Miller blitzed 1:51.23 for 800m today to win the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Houston Texas. The young athlete's opening 400m was 56.41. The time sets a new world age group record for 14-year-olds. His time also stood as the fastest of the day against all age divisions, including the 15-16 age group and 17-18 age group.
The prior record was set last September by Jakob Ingebrigsten of Norway at 1:52.60.
The mark was a huge improvement for Miller, who set his prior best at 1:53.64 in the prelim round on Monday. According to the AAU, the win marks his seventh national title and eighth meet record -- but, his first world record.
There may already be another athlete gunning to take down Miller's mark in five years.
Jonathan Simms of Plano, Texas broke Miller's nine-year-old age group meet record in the 800m today with a time of 2:19.43. Miller ran 2:25.43 in 2011. Simms also won the 400m in 59.25.
