Girls Sweepstakes Race
Saucony Flo50 Ranked Teams: No. 3 Great Oak (CA), No. 6 Arcadia (CA), No. 17 Buchanan (CA), No. 25 Claremont (CA), bubble team Southlake Carroll (TX)
Saucony Flo50 Ranked Individuals: No. 6 Brie Oakley, No. 18 Julia Heymach
Challengers: Kelli Hines, Chloe Arriaga, Rylee Bowen, Desert Vista (AZ)
Start Time: Saturday, 9:34 p.m. PT
What to watch: The Woodbridge XC Classic is the first cross country meet this season that's big enough to draw top athletes from multiple states. Brie Oakley headlines the individual field here with her U.S. No. 1 16:44 5K from the Liberty Bell Invitational in Colorado last weekend. Her time broke the course record by 14 seconds; the prior mark was set by Jordyn Colter the year she placed fourth at Foot Locker. Oakley will be challenged by Julia Heymach, a 2015 Foot Locker finalist and the defending Texas state cross country champion.
Two other names to watch are Kelli Hines of Mission Viejo, California, who made a statement by winning the Cool Breeze Evening Invitational two weeks ago with a blazing 16:54.81, and Chloe Arriaga of Walnut, California, who won the short course Rosemead Invitational in 16:01.4.
All the top California teams will race here with the exception of No. 4-ranked Davis. No. 3 Great Oak won the team title last year and returns five girls from that squad, including top three Evelyn Mandel, Sandra Pflughoft and Sydney Belus. Nicole Rice ended up coming on strong later in the season, and looks to be the top runner for 2016. This will be the varsity squad's debut race, though their 'B' team has the fastest three-mile average in the country so far.
No. 6 Arcadia and No. 25 Claremont will get a rematch from the Cool Breeze Evening Invitational, which Claremont won with 63 points to Arcadia's 80. But the Apaches were without two of their projected top-five runners. This meet should be a better indication of the California pecking order.
Watch the highlight reel from the Cool Breeze Evening Invitational, where Kelli Hines won the individual title and Claremont took top honors over Arcadia.
No. 17 Buchanan has not raced yet this season.
Southlake Carroll will make the trek from Texas in hopes of improving their national ranking. They ran very close to No. 23 Keller at the Marcus I Invitational and scored 77 points to Keller's 64 points.
Another potential bubble team is Desert Vista from Arizona. The Thunder placed fifth at NXN in 2014, and recently posted an impressive showing at the Desert Solstice with a 27-second top-five spread and two runners who finished the course in under 18 minutes.
Boys Sweepstakes Race
Saucony Flo50 Ranked Teams: No. 5 Great Oak (CA), No. 15 Southlake Carroll (TX), No. 18 Madera South (CA), No. 21 Claremont (CA)
Saucony Flo50 Ranked Individuals: No. 4 Reed Brown, No. 7 Cooper Teare, No. 18 Luis Grijalva
Challengers: Desert Hills (UT), Mountain Vista (CO), Steven Khan, Ben Hamer
Start Time: 9:54 p.m. PT
What to watch: California vs. Texas! Great Oak will make their season debut after graduating nearly everyone from the 2015 NXN title-winning team. They still pick up the No. 5 ranking on the Saucony Flo50, but this will be an interesting run against teams who have tested themselves already.
Claremont moved up to No. 21 in the Saucony Flo50 national rankings after taking down Brea Olinda by 72 points at the Cool Breeze Evening Invitational. They also recently won the Palomares League Cluster and have been led by two different runners in both races: Ryan Renken and Owen Bishop.
Texas squad Southlake Carroll easily won the team title at Marcus I behind race champion and No. 4-ranked Reed Brown, who will be in contention for the individual win here. He'll be challenged by No. 7-ranked Cooper Teare, who is making his season debut, and No. 18 Luis Grijalva, who won the Rated section last year in 14:48.2.
Steven Khan of Ayala High School could pull off an upset. The senior won the Great Cow Run in 14:28.86, the fastest three-mile time in California and the nation this year.
No. 18 Madera South has not raced yet.
Girls Rated Race
Saucony Flo50 Ranked Individuals: No. 11 Allie Schadler
Start Time: 8:54 p.m. PT
What to watch: The fastest run of the day could potentially come out of the Rated race instead of the Sweepstakes race thanks to Allie Schadler. The three-time Arizona state cross country champion and her sister, sophomore Samantha Schadler, give Rio Rico High School (AZ) one of the best 1-2 punches in the nation. Allie, who ranks No. 11, opened her season with a 17:01.76 5K win at Desert Solstice.
In the team battle, prepare to be impressed by the depth of Great Oak. The Wolfpack could pull off a team sweep -- not just in this race and the Sweepstakes race, but the Freshmen, Sophomore and JV sections, too. Last year, they won the Rated race with 46 points, which was nearly 100 points lower than runner-up Hart High School.
Boys Rated Race
Start Time: 9:14 p.m. PT
What to watch: The most intriguing individual competing here is David Moreno of Quartz High School, who won the uber-quick Seaside Invitational in 14:52.2. The senior is ready for a breakout season after recording PRs of 4:21 and 1:55 on the track this spring.
