The last mega-invitational of the season, the Ocean Breeze Invitational, will host over 9000 entries over two days. The boys action will be taking place on Saturday, while the girls get their chance on Sunday. FloTrack will be streaming all the action live, so be sure to tune in. MileSplit will be on the scene, chatting with the winners, and breaking down all the action.
Below, you will find eight events we are most excited about. These are likely to rewrite the National Leaderboards, so strap yourself in for one of the biggest weekends of the season!
When: Saturday - 12:15pm
The real measure of a mile indoors is how many guys have broken 4:20. That list starts with Jordan Brannan (Colt's Neck), who leads the field with a 4:13.87 best. Next up is Evan Addison (La Salle College HS, PA), who is coming in with a 4:17.62. Brannan's teammate Anthony Russo is also under, with a 4:19.03 from last spring.
Next up comes those at or on the 4:20.00 mark. James Abrahams (Haverford, PA) comes in with 4:20.28, Spencer Smucker (West Chester Henderson, PA) is at 4:20.55, Isaiah Claiborne (Northport) at 4:20.94, and Aaron Siff-Scherr (Schrieber) the closest at 4:20.04.
Most intriguing of all may be that of Kevin Moshier (Corning), the defending Indoor NY State Champion. Until proved otherwise, he is the favorite to repeat this March, and this will be his first real test at the facility that will be home to States.
When: Saturday - 9:00am
The nation is ready for some fast two-mile action. This meet will look to produce a sub-9:25 performance. Chief among them will be Devin Hart (Point Pleasant Boro, NJ), who comes in well under, at 9:17.10. But he will have plenty of company from those in the Garden State. Joey DeFeo (Delbarton, NJ) is right on his heels with a 9:21.47. Pennsylvania doesn't want to be left out, entering Matt D'Aquilla (Lower Merion) at 9::21.87, while New York answers with Kevin Moshier (Corning) at 9:23.81. Bragging rights are on the line here. Jack Shea (Cherokee, NJ) and Tim Euler (East Meadow) are both a 9:31, and are ready for breakthrough races, ready to be in the mix.
When: Saturday - 3:30pm
New York is rolling out over 400m. The rare event is being contested at just the right point in the season, and South Shore is looking to take advantage. Ramone Newland and Garfield Napier are NY #2 and NY #4 in the 55m, while Ramone also has NY #2 in the 300m. Tyrese Halls (Hempstead) will be able to keep pace with the duo, as will Kino Cheltenham (Brooklyn Tech). Both are within Top 20 for the 300m in New York. The sole outsider here will be Miles Green (St. Joe's Prep), who has run 48.19 for the 400m outdoors.
While many of the New Yorkers will be chasing 48.56 to break into the Top 25 All-Time, Tahje Flemmings has another number to look out for. The Freshman State Record held by Lionel Williams ('04) is set at 49.87. He is one step away from his second State Record.
When: Saturday - 9:10am
It looks to be a four man battle out front in the 800m. The real battle will be between Dave Whitfield (Arch. Prendergast) and Ben Bulkeley (Fairport). Whitfield has a 1:53.58 to his name, while Bulkeley has a 1:53.70 of his own. Bulkeley also holds a New York State Class Record over the 1000m, so the credentials are there for both of them.
However, Nick Crociata (Hauppauge) won't be content to sit back and watch, as he carries his own best of 1:54.99 into the fray. So does Hudson Delisle (Quakertown, PA), who has a 1:55.61 to his name. US #3 will require to break under 1:54.00, and this is the field to do so.
When: Sunday - 9:10am
It's triple duty for distance standout Katherine Lee (Shoreham-Wading River). She's entered in the Mile, the 2-Mile, and the 4xMile. Chances are likely she'll narrow that down closer to the event, but wherever she goes, expect it to be fast. She's already clocked an impressive 3000m mark this season, so the 2-Mile seems like the logical choice. The Long Island record is 10:19.91, held by Diana Vizza of North Shore, good for NY #5 All-Time. Not a bad target to shoot for.
Fellow Long Islander Brianna O'Brien (Wheatley) will be challenging her in the field, as well as PA standout MaryGrace Rittler (Cheltenham).
When: Sunday - 12:15pm
Pennsylvania is taking over the sprints! The big matchup at the top of the order is Kouri Peace (Pennridge) vs. Olympic Trialist Chanel Brisset (Cheltenham). Peace is bringing 23.60 speed to the duel, while Brisset has 23.88 speed. Both those marks would be National Leaders right now. The heat continues from PA, as Meaghan Shewbrooks (Central Bucks East) rounds out the top three with a 24.95. Brissett is also entered in the open 55m, forgoing her specialty of the 55HH for a later date.
When: Sunday - 1:50pm
Other States hop into the mix when the sprints go double the distance. Chief among them is Paris Peoples (Benjamin Cardozo) at 55.82 and Aliyah Taylor (Rancocas Valley, NJ) at 55.79. Don't expect it to be that clear cut, however, as Cheltenham brings Alexis Crosby at 54.62 and Bria Barnes at 56.31.
The most interesting entry has to be Olivia Arizin (Cardinal O'Hara, PA), who is dropping down in distance. Better known for her 2:06.80 in the 800m event, her speed at half the distance will be something to watch out for.
When: Sunday - 9:25am
We mentioned Olivia Arizin's speed in her 400m showing, but 2:06.80 can't be ignored in the actual event. Consider her the top seed, with plenty of company. Hannah Reale (Shenendehowa) has to be the biggest competition in the field for Arizin, as she run 2:06 on the anchor split of the 4x800m. Emily Philippides (Greenwich, CT) had a big win here at the Freedom Games over 600m, and has run 2:11.03 for 800m. Terri Turner (Penn Wood, PA) can do one better, with her personal best of 2:09.61. Rounding out the top seeds comes two from the PSAL. Shalah Means (Benjamin Cardozo) is always dangerous, and Shayla Sanders (Young Women's Leadership) is having the season of her life.
