UTEP 800m Champion Emmanuel Korir Runs 44.67!
This past weekend something special happened. UTEP freshman Emmanuel Korir became the seventh man ever to have run a sub-1:47 800m and a sub-45 sec 400m. Korir ran 44.67 at the UTEP Invitational in El Paso, Texas.
The last time someone did this was 17 years ago when South Africa's Hendrick Mokganyetsi ran 44.94 in Roodepoort, South Africa.
Not only did Korir join an elusive club he also is the youngest to join the sub-1:47/45.0 club besting Germany's Harald Schmid by 8 days.
It is very likely Korir will lower his 800m pb to 1:42-1:45 in the next few years which will make his 400/800 range even more impressive.
Imagine if Donavan Brazier and Clayton Murphy stuck around one more year to race this kid in the NCAAs...
*Not counting the London Marathon or World Relays.
Edose Ibadin (Hampton '15) and Jesse Garn (Binghamton '16) ran sub-1:46 at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational. It was the first time both men have ever broken 1:46 in their careers.
Fresh off his 3:35.99, New Mexico's Josh Kerr rabbited his future competition to 3:40 1500s at the Cardinal Classic.
Stanford's Elise Cranny and Christina Aragon ran the #1 and #4 1500 times in the NCAA. Also, Aragon told FloTrack she is still doing gymnastics three times a week!
Grant Fisher is healthy after cruising to a 13:37 on his home track.
Stanford head coach Chris Miltenberg gave FloTrack a 'Sean McGorty update' saying that Sean is healthy and will likely run the 1500m at NCAAs.
Houston's Brian Barraza ran what would have been an NCAA leading 3k steeplechase in 8:32.48. However, Barraza is redshirting this year to preserve eligibility for the 2017-18 school year.
Auburn's Odean Skeen ran a wind-legal sub-10 100m in 9.98 (+2.0 m/s). Skeen has been on a roll at Auburn after taking a year off last season. The last time Skeen was in the collegiate system was when he was dominating the JUCO scene.
Wayde van Niekerk ran a new 200m pb in 19.90 at the South Africa National Championships
Nathaniel Mitchell-Blake (LSU) and Christian Coleman (Tennessee) ran wind-legal 200m seasons bests in 20.15 and 20.28 respectively
Four men ran under 45 seconds in the 400:
44.60 Texas A&M senior Fred Kerley (#1 NCAA, #2 World)
44.67 UTEP freshman Emmanuel Korir (#3 World, #4 Kenya All-Time)
44.77 LSU senior Michael Cherry (#3 NCAA, #4 World)
44.82 LSU alum Vernon Norwood (#5 World)
South Dakota freshman Chris Nilsen broke the American junior record in the pole vault by 1 centimeter.
Texas' Chrisann Gordon ran 50.64 (#3 World) in the 400m at the LSU Alumni Gold meet.
Caster Semenya won the 400m and 800m at the South African National Championships in 51.60 and 2:01.03.
PSU's Isaiah Harris won a stacked 800 in Virginia.
NC State's Erika Kemp beat Notre Dame's Anna Rohrer 15:41 to 15:43 in the Virginia Challenge 5k.
