Alyssa Wilson of Donovan Catholic (NJ) broke the outdoor national record in the shot put with a throw of 57-01.25 (17.41m) at the Ocean County Championships in Jackson, NJ, on Monday.
Heading into the competition, Wilson was ranked second all-time in the discipline thanks to her previous outdoor best of 55-9.25, which earned her the win at New Balance Nationals Outdoor last spring. She began her historic senior campaign by becoming the only girl in high school history to break 57 feet after setting the indoor national record at 57-5.5 this past winter.
Last weekend, the UCLA signee showed her versatility by also throwing a New Jersey state record in the discus with a mark of 182-0 at the Rowan University Girls HS Open. That performance ranks U.S. No. 1 this season and breaks into the top 15 all-time.
Following Monday's performance, Wilson once again passes another successful shot put thrower, Raven Saunders, who held the previous best shot put mark of 56-8.25 since 2014 at the Taco Bell Classic in South Carolina. Before Wilson broke the indoor record, Saunders had held that honor as well. You can watch Saunder's record-breaking throw from 2014 below.
