Missouri Southern's Vincent Kiprop lit the track on fire today in the 10,000m at the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships to win his second national outdoor title in 28:32.07, break the facility record he set last year (29:23.92), and nearly reset the 22-year-old meet record of 28:26.56 in the process.

From the gun, Kiprop wasted no time in establishing a blazing-hot pace--he opened his first 400 meters in 1:03.50, and only James Ngandu (Tiffin), Sydney Gidabuday (Adams State), Dominik Notz (Alaska Anchorage) and Will Reyes (Chico State) dared to follow. In his first mile, Kiprop ran 4:28.08.

By the time the 11th lap rolled around, the front pack thinned to Kiprop followed by Ngandu. The Tiffin senior hung on through 18 laps, but couldn't match Kiprop's surge at lap 19--he cranked out a 1:06.34 400m split to put distance on Ngandu, and didn't look back. It only took the sophomore 2:14 to close the final 800 meters.

Kiprop's victory marks his fourth national title. In total, he owns two in the 10,000m, one in the indoor 5,000m and one in cross country. He could add to that collection if he can earn another win in the 5,000m on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. EST.

En route to winning the 10,000m at the Mt. SAC Relays earlier this year, Kiprop established a new PR of 28:19.94, which obliterated his school record and now ranks as the seventh-best time ever in Division II.

Watch Kiprop take down the invitational heat at the 2017 Mt. SAC Relays 10,000m by running 28:19.94:
