Trey Hardee ended his illustrious career in the decathlon today after unfortunately crashing in the 110m hurdles and fouling out in the discus at the 2017 IAAF World Championships.

Although Hardee got off to a decent start, the two-time world champion and 2012 Olympic silver medalist snagged the third hurdle, which caused him to take a nasty spill. Later, he was disqualified from the event for intentionally knocking over the fourth hurdle. His fortune didn't improve in the seventh event, the discus, as he couldn't land a legal throw.

Hardee, 33, was ranked fifth overall with 4,313 points heading into the sixth event, the 110m hurdles, and was within striking distance of the podium--less than 50 points. But leaving back-to-back events empty-handed made it impossible for him to make up for lost ground, so he withdrew from the competition.

In June, Hardee won the U.S. title in the decathlon with 8,225 points to qualify for the world championships ahead of Zach Ziemek and Devon Williams. He fought through various injuries over the past several years, including a hamstring problem that kept him from completing the decathlon at the 2016 Olympic Trials.

Williams finished 10th overall for the United States, while Ziemek recorded a DNF after withdrawing from the final event due to injury.
