Galen Rupp and Meseret Defar won the 2017 Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon.
Galen Rupp won the Rock 'N' Roll Philadelphia half marathon today in 1:02:18 to distance the field by more than two minutes. Ethiopian legend Meseret Defar won the women's race by about a minute in 1:08:46 over Caroline Rotich of Kenya; Rupp's Nike Oregon Project teammate Jordan Hasay was third in 1:10:42.
Neither Rupp nor Hasay set half marathon bests despite the speedy history in Philadelphia; but that's not particularly concerning, as the Chicago Marathon is the main focus of the fall for both athletes. Remember that Rupp recorded a disappointing 11th-place, 1:01:59 finish in Prague as his final tune-up for what would be a rousing, runner-up finish at the Boston Marathon this spring. For Hasay to lose to Defar is nothing to be ashamed of, as the two-time Olympic gold medalist is one of the best distance runners in the modern age. Rotich's performance was a bit more surprising, as the 33-year-old has not had a standout performance since winning the Boston Marathon in 2015 and in fact dropped out of Boston this year.
Fellow American Marty Hehir of HOKA ONE ONE took second place in the men's race in 1:04:00 and Jared Ward, a 2016 Olympian in the marathon, was fifth in 1:04:43.
