Claudia Lane Shatters Sarah Baxter's Untouchable Mt. SAC Record
Claudia Lane shattered Sarah Baxter's Mt. SAC XC Invitational course record in 15:49.
Claudia Lane, the defending Foot Locker champion, shattered Sarah Baxter's meet record today at the Brooks Mt. SAC XC Invitational by running 15:49 to win the D1/D2 Individual Sweepstakes. Baxter's 2012 meet record of 16:00 was previously considering one of -- if not the -- most impressive high school girls cross country performances of all time.
The course has changed slightly this year at the finish area due to construction, but the main features and hills are still intact so Lane's run must be considered the superior performance over Baxter's effort.
The junior from Malibu High School ran 16:32.6 to win the sweepstakes race at Mt. SAC last year, then the sixth-fastest mark of all time. To this point in the season last year, Lane had already raced six times while this year, Mt. SAC is just her third competition of the fall in an effort to sustain a peak through December and January.
Lauren Peurifoy, 25th at NXN last year, was the only runner to come within a minute of Lane's time. She ran 16:42 for second place, a top 10 all-time performance of her own. Gillian Wagner of Redwood placed third in 17:13.
