Shelby Houlihan Breaks American 5000m Record
The 25-year-old ran 14:34 in the 5000m in Heusden, Belgium on Saturday, bettering the mark set by Shannon Rowbury. Rowbury ran 14:38.92 in 2016.
Shelby Houlihan’s meteoric 2018 now includes an American record.
The 25-year-old ran 14:34.45 in the 5000m in Heusden, Belgium on Saturday, bettering the mark set by Shannon Rowbury in Brussels in 2016, 14:38.92.
Houlihan's record attempt was assisted with pacing help from her Bowerman Track Club teammate, and former American 5000m record holder, Shalane Flanagan.
Her 5000m personal best entering the meet was a 15:00.37 that she ran in the prelims of the 2017 World Championships.
After placing fourth and fifth at March’s World Indoor Championships 1500m and 3000m, Houlihan has piled up one stunning performance after another in the outdoor season. She swept the 1500m and 5000m at the U.S. Outdoor Championships in June and took Diamond League victories in Eugene and Lausanne.
Beyond Houlihan, the race in Heusden featured an all-star cast of Americans. Molly Huddle took second in 15:01.44 and Karissa Schweizer took third in 15:02.44

Houlihan’s next race is scheduled to be the 1500m in Birmingham, where she has the opportunity to bring down that American record as well. That mark, also held by Rowbury, is 3:56.29. Houlihan ran 3:57.34 in Lausanne on July 5th.
