Since his rise to the top of the track and field world in 2008, Usain Bolt competed in the United States on only three occasions—the latest coming in 2015. But the United States might end up being the site of the sprint legend’s soccer career.
USL Austin, the Austin, Texas-based franchise of the United Soccer League is reportedly one of the team’s that Bolt is considering. The franchise, part of the United Soccer League, will begin its first season in 2019.
After retiring from track last August, Bolt has continued his pursuit to play professional soccer. He trained with German club Borussia Dortmund in March and also practiced with lower-level clubs in Norway and South Africa. The Central Coast Mariners of Australia’s A-League have also had discussions with Bolt about joining their squad.
The Las Vegas Lightning, who joined the USL in 2018, have also expressed interest in signing the sprinter.
Jose Luis Sanchez Sola, the club’s manager said, "He's the fastest guy on Earth and he has tried out with some of the best clubs in the world. So coming to play soccer at second division in the United States makes real sense.”
