Analysis:
The Oregon men look poised for another top ten NCAA finish despite losing long-time coach Andy Powell and No. 1 runner Tanner Anderson to the University of Washington. The Ducks return four of their top five athletes who placed sixth last year in Louisville and add Ben Thomas as head coach. Thomas previously led Virginia Tech for 17 successful seasons, where the men made NCAAs three times in 2012, 2015 and 2017.
All-American Matthew Maton will be counted on to contribute as redshirt junior; if healthy, his championship history bodes well for the Ducks as a No. 1 runner—he was 29th at the 2016 NCAA XC Championships. He has not raced since placing ninth in the 2017 NCAA indoor mile final.
Cooper Teare and Reed Brown ran 2-3 for the Ducks as true freshmen last season and look poised to continue that trend after strong track campaigns that saw both men qualify for the NCAA Championships. Teare was only four spots outside of All-American honors in cross country last year and clocked an impressive 13:46 PB for 5K in the spring.
