Analysis:
SUNY Geneseo returns all but one member of their 2017 sixth place nationals team, a fact that should have the Knights optimistic they can reach the podium after missing it for the first time since 2014. Geneseo will have to make do without All-American Kristen Homeyer, their No. 1 last year, but the overall outlook is still promising with an experienced roster and a potential All-American leading the charge.
Elise Ramirez missed an All-American finish by just five seconds last November, but a big track season— she broke 17 minutes in the 5k for the first time— shows she’s ready to take the next step in cross country. Ramirez is the clear front-runner on the this team, and has been remarkably consistent at nationals in her career— she’s placed in the top-75 each of the last three years.
The Knights have three candidates for their No. 2 job. Senior Allie Fernandez is the next woman up by virtue of her 104th place finish at NCAAs, but juniors Dana Cebulski (114th in ’17) and Genny Corcoran (127th in ’17) will also battle for the role. Cebulski finished a place ahead of Fernandez at regionals last year, while Corcoran has the best 5k PR of the bunch.
186th as a freshman is nothing to be ashamed of, and Carissa DiTullio is likely to improve substantially from that in her sophomore year. If she can rise to the level of the Geneseo trio above her, the Knights will have a great shot of stepping back on the podium.
