The track and field community is mourning the loss of Daeshon Gordon, an All-American hurdler who attended LSU for two seasons before transferring to Northwestern State.
A release posted on Northwestern State’s athletic website today at 6:31 p.m. stated she “passed away suddenly Sunday morning.” Gordon was 22 years old.
Gordon’s decorated career took off when she competed in Florida as a prep, and quickly became the top-ranked hurdler in the state. After graduating in 2014, she joined LSU's team with personal bests of 13.61 in the 100m hurdles, 41.45 in the 300m hurdles and 58.70 in the 400m hurdles.
During her time at LSU, she immediately made an impact by earning All-American status in the 100m hurdles as a freshman and the 60m hurdles as a sophomore by taking fourth at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships. The PR she set there, 8.04, is seventh on LSU's all-time list, and she also ranks 10th in LSU history for the 400m hurdles (57.24).
She followed her first season at LSU with an incredible performance at at the Jamaican National Senior Championships, where she crushed the Jamaican junior record in the 100m hurdles and her PR in 12.97 for fourth—just one spot outside of qualifying for the IAAF World Championships, but more than good enough for entry to the 2015 Pan American Junior Championships, where she earned bronze.
Gordon closed out her collegiate career with the Lady Demons this past season by rewriting school records in the 100m hurdles and 60m hurdles. This fall, she was completing her undergraduate program with the intent of becoming an elementary school teacher.
“Daeshon was a fierce competitor and a great teammate. I cherished the connection that she and I had that grew even stronger after she completed her eligibility in June and told me she was determined to be the first female member of her family to earn a college degree," Northwestern State athletic director Greg Burke said in the release. "I ask that the NSU Demon family keep Daeshon’s family and our track and field program in their thoughts and prayers.”
Her teammates and the track community paid tribute to her on social media today, including former LSU standout Aleia Hobbs, Kimber Payne, Damion Thomas, Jr. and LSU head coach Dennis Shaver.
