He has yet to announce an agent or shoe sponsor.
On Sunday, the 21-year-old from the University of Kansas finished third at the 2019 USATF Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, qualifying for the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar. Hoppel gained notoriety this season by winning 21 consecutive races from January to July, including an undefeated collegiate campaign. His 1:44.41 PB was run on June 7 in his NCAA outdoor 800m win.
Hoppel was third behind Donavan Brazier and Clayton Murphy at USAs in 1:46.31. His 21 race win streak ended in the semi-finals on Saturday, but the young star has only lost to those two aforementioned global studs in 2019.
Hoppel announced his decision in a letter addressed to the Kansas community, his coaches, family and friends.
“After a brief period of determining how to move forward in my career, I have decided to forgo my senior year of collegiate eligibility and pursue my dream of running professionally,” he wrote.
“My ability and accomplishments would not have been possible if it were not for the people who surround me and show me an unimaginable amount of love and support.”
